Back stepping. Back steps are great options to pass all types of guards and enter into a variety of submissions. In this clip, I’m able to use a back step to free myself from my student’s half guard and complete the pass. I then immediately back step again to set up and secure the triangle. As effective as the back step is, always be aware that there is potential for your own back to be taken if your opponent counters. @formjiujitsu #bjj #jiujitsu #bjjtechnique #grappling

Off balancing and upgrading grips. As you begin to off-balance your partner, you’ll often need to change grips based on their reactions. You shouldn’t let go of everything at once, and you don’t need an overcomplicated gripping system. Usually, switching one grip at a time and toggling back and forth is enough. Here, I switch my left hand from ankle to sleeve, then back to the ankle, while moving my partner side to side. Once I create a strong enough angle, I’m able to switch my right hand from the collar to the hip grip, which finally lets me beat their defenses and establish a stronger attacking connection. @formjiujitsu #bjj #jiujitsu #bjjtechnique #grappling

Step-through passes are hard to defend. They break timing and create awkward angles where normal guard retention, like a high leg pummel can actually make it easier for your opponent to stabilize or connect to other passes. In this clip, I treat the cross step like an early knee-on-belly defense. As the leg steps through, I underhook it, invert underneath, and connect to berimbolo / leg drag dilemmas. @formjiujitsu #bjj #jiujitsu #bjjtechnique #grappling

Give space” — one of the most common reasons people struggle to execute moves during sparring is because they’re too tight and afraid to give space. In this clip, I use a shin wedge to counter my student’s inversion from reverse De La Riva and end up in a leg drag/guard pass. Notice how I put my hips on the mat (not back) to create space for my shin to slide in. If I stay tight or try to flatten him, I wouldn’t be able to get the wedge in—and it likely ends with my opponent on my back or with a sweep. @formjiujitsu #bjj #jiujitsu #bjjtechnique #grappling

Using De La Riva to off-balance and enter into X-guard. I used to use the cross collar here. Against good people, it started to fall apart. They’d drop their far shoulder, create a weird angle, and it would expose my back or lead to a pass. Switching to the same side collar changed that completely. It lets me control that shoulder the entire time, keeps everything tighter, and makes the entry into X much more stable. Once I’m in, there are a lot of options. Ankle locks, leg drags, bolos, and wrestle ups. In this clip, I go with the wrestle up. The same side collar makes it hard for them to attack my back as I come up, so it’s very safe. Very versatile. Using the lapel to enter into deep De La Riva and attack the baby bolo. I’ve played this scenario out with this student dozens of times and he’s very good at shutting down the back take by grabbing my lapel and resetting. This time, instead of trying to muscle through the grip (what I usually do with mixed results, usually in his favor 😂), I switched to a butterfly sweep. It creates a lose-lose dilemma. Putting my opponent’s hips on the ground with De La Riva and attacking the berimbolo. Switched to leg drag and was able to threaten/bait a twister hook at the same time. This allowed me to take the back instead of coming up for a traditional leg drag —> cross choke for the finish. @formjiujitsu #bjj #jiujitsu #jiujitsulifestyle #grappling

Working both top and bottom concepts from the past 6 weeks of class. From collar sleeve, I off-balance to get him seated. He knows the assignment, so he avoids falling back and giving up the sweep—which lets me transition into 70/30. From there, I’m able to keep his weight back and start preparing to come on top. I stay patient here—no rushing, especially with a 70lb+ size difference where scrambles don’t favor me. When I come up, I keep control of his leg so he can’t easily stand. Pay attention to how I switch from a cross pant grip to same-side pant before I pass—this shuts down his ability to get up. Instead of sprawling or trying to force him flat, I use a windshield wiper into a backstep (almost like a long step) to pass—avoiding a head-on battle with a stronger opponent—and settle into side control.
