Fun fact: Ottawa’s obsession with tulips is actually a 75-year-old "thank you" from the Netherlands!
During WWII, Canada gave the Dutch Royal Family a safe place to stay right here in Ottawa. They even declared a hospital room "international territory" so Princess Margriet could be born with Dutch citizenship.
After the war, the Princess sent 100,000 bulbs to say thanks for our hospitality and for the Canadian troops who helped liberate her country. The tradition stuck, and the Dutch still send 10,000 bulbs every year to keep the bond alive.
