March 19th saw the passing of Chuck Norris. It brought back a fond memory regarding how I began my career in the prop and model making business. When I first thought to break into this field, some of the first cold call interviews I made were with some Chicago area model fabrication shops. One interview was with a shop called Majeski Models Plus. They were in an old factory building on Ontario street at the time. The owner, Conrad (Connie) Majeski was kind enough to give me a meeting and look through my limited portfolio. His shop mainly created more technically designed prototype pieces for various industries. All from blueprints and specific direction. A few days after our meeting I received a call from Connie. He had just been contacted by a film production company that was shooting a Chuck Norris movie in Chicago - Code of Silence. They wanted a non working prop built for some of the scenes. They needed a handheld remote controller that Chuck was going to use to appear as though he was controlling an armed robotic tank called the “Prowler”. The design of this prop was kind of open ended and still being thought through by the production company. He remembered our meeting a few days earlier. He also remembered that I came from more of creative artistic bent, not a technical engineering background. Since this was more of an artistic project - no plans or blueprints - and not something that his shop usually dealt with, he asked me if I would be interested in working in his shop to help fabricate this prop. Otherwise he said he would pass on it. I said of course I’d be thrilled to work on it. So, working with the film production designer and the great crew at Majeski Models, we created 2 of these “controller” props (one as a back up). One of the first prop making jobs I ever worked on. And a memorable one! Thank you Connie. RIP.

Rotating sign display with interior illumination in the sign and base. Always interesting to engineer projects like these!

Very excited that this footage has finally been released and I can share it! I really loved this project. It was technically challenging and we had way too much to shoot, but somehow it all came together.
This was all shot practically, and none of it is CGI. Even the wrapper at the end was stop motion. That said, there was a lot of post cleanup and @optimusdesignchicago did an incredible job.
Swipe to see the hand carved candy bars and some of the other things that went into making this. More BTS videos coming soon :)
