“But ‘Dìdi (弟弟)’ isn’t only for people who grew up in Fremont. Chris’s experiences transcend the Bay Area and Asian American communities. They capture the crux of adolescence: shouldering uncertainty that feels insurmountable in the moment and looking back to realize it was inconsequential.” After attending a screening at the San Francisco International Film Festival’s opening night in May, guest writer Desiree Luo @desiree.luo reflects on the resonance of the coming-of-age narrative of “Dìdi (弟弟)” set in her hometown in the Bay Area, Fremont, mirroring her own early teenage years. She also interviewed director Sean Wang and lead actor Izaac Wang about the film, from casting actual kids instead of 30-year-olds to utilizing small local stories to explore larger universal themes. SEBii, kimj, and R!R!Riot brought two shows of “ChineseKoreanAmerican” across California last week—first at Catch One in Los Angeles with @americanrecycling , then up to San Francisco. Bhertuy, Pooka, and 10cust rounded out the lineup on April 10 for a hazy night of hyperpop, with trap, alternative R&B, and other experimental subgenres woven in. “This album is such a personal one for me; I was actually trying not to think too much about the audience when making it so that I could try to achieve something as authentic and true to myself as I could. Now that I’m sharing it, it’s for anyone who is going through big changes in their life, wants to connect with themselves, or wants to tap into their inner creative spirit.” Staff member Annie Wu @annies.photos.album photographed Luna Li at Boston’s Cafe 939 on September 21 on her “When a Thought Grows Wings” United States tour. She also interviewed the Canadian artist about her sophomore album of the same name, a deeply personal project released in August, crafted with the multi-instrumentalist’s signature ethereal sound. “I hope people hear [the album] and feel like it’s a different place from everyday life. They know who I am and stuff, and I‘m just a person, but I hope when they hear it, it feels like they’re transported somewhere else.” Guest photographer Hyunwoo (Daniel) Park @hydap photographed and interviewed New York City-based futuristic indie pop artist Kaz Moon on his first headlining tour at Los Angeles‘s Moroccan Lounge on September 28. “I’ve always had a vision for the type of stuff that I’ve wanted to make [...] As I’ve gotten more resources, I’ve been able to tap into what I’ve been wanting to make more and more. And I feel like this is probably the most realized version of this image I’ve had in my head since I was 16, which is kind of terrifying because, after this, I’m like, Well, what do I do [now]? I need to change and develop it somehow. But it’s exciting. This is the culmination of five years of what I’ve been wanting to do.” Guest photographer Elmer “Eruma” Ferraren @erumasglue interviewed MICO @micotoronto before his “Cancel your plans” tour began and photographed him as he kicked off the tour at Los Angeles’s Echoplex on September 11. The Toronto-based indie pop artist shared about his upcoming fifth EP, “internet hometown hero,” his journey as an independent artist, life on tour, and more.
