Behind the Scenes - Creating the score for Wake Up Dead Man
I had an incredible time composing and constructing the music for Wake Up Dead Man. When
@riancjohnson and I first started talking, I realized he was searching for something darker and more unsettling. I knew it was time to go exploring.
Months later I emerged with a broken harmonium, ricochet strings, a 6-headed-bass-clarinet-rhythm-machine, and the sound of dozens of violins scraping their bows across their strings. It’s a twisty textural journey that finally emerges into the light with a 10 minute violin concerto.
Over the course of a year, I got to reunite with so many of the amazing players that have graced each of the Benoit Blanc scores as well as a handful of new faces.
Gigantic thanks to
@abbeyroadstudios , Lucy Whalley from Tiger Tracks for coordinating all the players, to Pete Cobbin and Kirsty Whalley for their amazing approach to sonic fidelity,
@jeffkryka for his faithful orchestrations,
@cliffmastersonmusic for conducting,
@joebonnvi , music editor extraordinaire, Kirsten Evans for the weird bass clarinet instrument she built for me, and of course
@judsoncrane and
@aaespo starring as the best team ever.
Finally, it’s worth noting that you don’t get to do a crazy explorational score like this without a steady hand in the director’s seat who knows exactly where the story needs to land while being constantly excited about what the music could be.
