here’s a glimpse into how I connected with two foundational concepts in music and dance: 4/4 timing and “On The One.”
The first time I saw 4/4 expressed clearly through movement was in a workshop by Popin’ Pete in Korea. At the time, I didn’t know what it was called—I just knew it had structure and intention. I even called it “Paragraphing” because of how it seemed to shape movement into phrases. 😅

Thank u
Later, I came across the concept of “On The One” in Ricky Vincent’s book Funk: The Music, The People, and The Rhythm of The One. That led me down a rabbit hole into James Brown’s, George Clinton music, where I began to truly understand the weight and power of the first beat—the downbeat.
I turn on every single beat and try this formula 🤣🤣
When Acky came to Singapore around 2016, He expressed “On The One” visually—not just rhythmically but through energy shifts in the body. Just like how Bboys hit a freeze “on the one,” Acky showed how that same energy applies to Popping and Boogaloo
As I dove deeper, I realized how 4/4 time forms the backbone of so many music genres we dance to—Hip Hop, House, Disco, and beyond. And the more I explored, the more I discovered that 4/4 goes way back—possibly to the 1600s or earlier—rooted in classical forms and traditional folk music rhythms.
So this journey—from seeing movement, reading about music, and connecting with cultural expressions—has helped me understand that rhythm isn’t just a beat
⭐️Bootsy Collins On The One’⭐️
“The One is where the funk begins. Everything starts on The One.”
“The One” refers to the first beat of the measure in 4/4 time.
And like how Bootsy love to say:
If u aint got the one, u aint got the funk ✨1️⃣🤣
ps: Im watching this video and I can see lots of influence in myself from my teacher Popin J ( sometime, there are empty spaces between the beat eg )
And the last sliding move, probably subconsciously inspired by my Singapore fellow popper: @ac_alex_ 💯

Thank you everyone, friends, teachers and students that contributed to my journey

A lot of things go unseen, but they don’t go unnoticed by me.
Life isn’t always beautiful or easy, but there’s a quiet kind of beauty in the way you keep going anyway.
As we step into parenthood, we begin to understand more deeply that every family walks a different path.
Different starting points, different rhythms of life.
And yet, within all of that, we learn to build our own kind of strength.
Thank you for loving me in all my versions —
my best days, my worst days, and everything in between.
And thank you for being such a good mum to Asher. He’s really lucky to have you.
We may not have everything figured out, but I’m grateful for what we have, and how we’re building it together.
Slowly, honestly, and always doing it the heart way — like you always say.
Happy Mother’s Day, and happiest birthday to one of the strongest but also the most timid
