Do you not see that the trees, as they grow,
anchor their roots deep into the earth?
They become a haven for birds,
shading them beneath their branches.

Our upcoming drop-in demonstration on Friday 23rd Aug from 14:00 - 15:30 at the Garrison Chapel will be with Ubaydullah Ahmad @rhythmofthepen , a calligrapher and graduate of the school. He will be demonstrating a range of early Kufic manuscript scripts and Maghribi scripts using traditional inks made from natural pigments, and would be happy to speak about his many years spent in Cairo and Istanbul learning calligraphy from some of the great masters of calligraphy today.
In this practical course, learn how to write in one of the two distinct but connected strands of calligraphy: Andalusian Maghribi and Maghribi Mabsout.
Andalusian Maghribi is an early, elegant form of Maghribi script. Maghribi Mabsout, on the other hand, is a renowned Moroccan calligraphy style known for its diverse letterforms.
Its name, Mabsout, reflects its origin in Morocco and its unique characteristics. This style is distinct due to the extended tails on certain letters, inherited from the ancient Kufic script. Key features of Mabsout include the use of dots and diacritical marks.
The course will begin with demonstrations and practice writing individual letters, moving on to conjoined letters and finally a short phrase for a final project. There will be extensive feedback at each phase, as well as opportunity to learn more about preparing materials such as the pen or qalam.
