I haven’t booked a solo session with Sam @rhythmacestudio for a while. The intention was to explore some new ideas, reaching for freshness again.
It can be quite subtle how writing and recording can become more about how a song is received rather than what is asking to said or sung.
Big shout out to @sagen.matt for the preproduction session on loosening the grip and finding the surprise. And of course to Sam… such a brilliant human and exceptional producer and engineer.
Anyway, feels good to be back in the saddle making music again.
I believe that might well be a wrap. The mixing for @daveritchiesmith wicked new long player, Fold is done and sounding mint. Big hearted tunes with excellent playing from the man himself alongside @hooperjarrod and @brgguitarsandco I’m still finding so much pleasure and serious benefit from breaking mixes out on to the desk and through a juicy analogue chain. The @thermioniccultureltd Culture Vulture does delightful interventions on the drum buss with @spectra1964 complimiter / @chandlerlimited germanium comps / @adesignsaudio HM2 valve EQ and @sslaudio bus plus all doing small but essential wrangling on the master buss. The difference they make is always worth the patching!

Beautiful day yesterday with the beloved @themonswhaler - so good to see them again and man alive we filled our boots. The new album is going to be absolutely amazing. Some serious song writing coupled with wicked playing. And if I may, some mentally good sonics already in the can! 2 mics@on the drums. Cos that’s all @moko.kiwitothecore needs to sound dope! (A Coles and a Chandler TG since you’re asking) Keep eyes and ears peeled.

What a weekend. Piano, Electric guitar, 12 string, Keys, Lead vocals all done, BV’s started and nearly finished. The 9 new songs for Fold are sounding awesome. Thanks Jarrod,Nate and Sam for bringing these to life.

Sam asked me to strip the neck and slightly modify the neck shape to make it a more comfortable Asymmetrical C, rather than the classic D that it was.
Followed by an oiled finish then a custom aged finish on the rest of the guitar to tie it all together.
Sam - “That neck is without doubt my favourite neck of all time now!”
Then a set of Mr Cool 90’s - Clean alnico 2 low powered P90.
Possibly my favourite sounding P90 set I’ve heard!

A lovely day with @boileduproots and a special mention for the top tubsman @jamescbmora who despite being only about 10 and insisting on wearing singlets to every session is a genuinely good human and wicked drummer - always up for some tuning shenanigans and some snare fettling and playing better every time I have the pleasure of covering him in mics.
