“Made In Yorkshire” (all the best things are!) testing is taking place ahead of our Gala this weekend. Visiting locomotives “Fox” and “River Mite” pose alongside our very own “Winston Churchill”.
All three locomotives were constructed in Yorkshire. “Winston Churchill” was constructed at the Yorkshire Engine Company in Sheffield, 95 years ago in 1931. “Fox” was constructed by founder of the Kirklees Light Railway, Brian Taylor near Huddersfield in 1987. “River Mite” was built by Clarkson of York in 1966 using a chassis and components that had been constructed by the Yorkshire Engineer Company in 1928.

📷Photo Charter Trains to Romney Warren Halt 📷
🤩A couple of slight adjustments to the Gala timetable on Saturday 16th May has given the opportunity for passengers to have a rare trip to Romney Warren Halt.
🚂These services will leave New Romney at 1056 and 1710 and travel to Romney Warren Halt where you can get off on the platform and capture the moment 'The Blue Train' or 'Samsons Centenary' as it flies past heading towards New Romney.
😎If time permits, your train will then perform a photo run past of Romney Warren Halt, before returning to pick you up for the return to New Romney.
🎊The 1710 departure also features a run through New Romney behind 'Majorie' our driving vehicle trailer that was previously used for School trains, and more recently by the permanent way department. An opportunity for some rare movements at the RH&DR!
✅This service is first come, first served and may be cancelled or adjusted if required with no notice subject to operational requirements.

🌊Get to know our visiting engines: 'River Mite' from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway🌊
🚂In 1960, after the R&ER railway was purchased, they only had two steam locomotives - River Esk & River Irt. The Preservation Society decided to raise funds for the new-build of a third steam loco.
⚙In 1964, the Preservation Society placed an order for River Mite at Clarkson’s in York, with the boiler to be built by Gower's of Bedford. In order to complete the tender, the frames from the old Poultney steam tender from the Railway Company’s River Esk were used.
👏River Mite was officially named by Alderman T. Westoll, Chairman of Cumberland County Council, and entered service on 20 May 1967. She eventually became the Society’s ‘flagship’ and has been an integral part of the railway's steam locomotive fleet ever since.
🤩River Mite has a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement, is painted in Furness Indian red and is 22' 6" long.
🎉River Mite's last visit to the RH&DR was in 2018. Come and see her again at this weekend's Spring Steam & Diesel Gala, on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th May 2026.
