Only this week did Nanay and I begin to organize my father’s things. We went through his closet, checking the shirts I liked. A fraction of his custom-tailored short-sleeved shirts, made since he got married, I share here. I had already taken a few when we became the same size, shortly after college. Nanay and Tatay would buy fabric at least once a month—more when we were kids, less when more of their salary went to tuition. Tatay liked patterns and prints. He didn’t have a preference for color or hue. Most of the shirts had been altered over time. His pants were adjusted gradually to his waistline as he lost weight in the past decade. I find it funny that Tatay, never drawn to appearances, titles, or other indices of upward mobility, is survived by the weight of style.

This POSITIONS lecture with Renan LARU-AN is the first in the GROUND TALKS SERIES organised by the Habitat Unit. Renan G. LARU-AN is a curator and theorist in contemporary arts. He creates exhibitionary, public, and research programs that study “insufficient” and “subtracted” images, subjects, and artistic works unsettled by development and integration projects. Renan is the founder of DiscLab | Research and Criticism, co-founder of the Philippine Contemporary Art Network (PCAN) at the Vargas Museum of the University of the Philippines and was formerly the artistic director of SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin. His practice includes the organisation of festivals, biennials and cross-disciplinary initiatives. in Prague, Singapore, Jakarta, Sharjah and Yokohama. In his lecture „Soil Accompaniment: Exercises for Architecture after Architecture“, Renan reflects on the Project Soil-beings (Lamánlupa), currently being exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. He elaborates on the capacity of soil and soil-beings to produce methods of accompaniment (companionship or even comradeship) within and alongside the development of architecture. To do so, his lecture draws on experiences during the course of research-making and field communion across the Philippine archipelago in preparation for the Biennale, in which the project encountered a persistent display of architectural imagination from non-architects. While discussing soil being architecture, Renan will talk about “creative exercises” and how soil can transform architectural imagination by transforming initiatives/projects into an adventure in relationality that offers another durable foundation for practising the built environment. This lecture will be accompanied by two impulse presentations from Prof. Dr. Antoine Vialle (Chair for Transitioning Urban Ecosystems) and artist and researcher Marina Resende Santos. The event will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Anke Hagemann and Natacha Quintero González

We are excited to invite you to the lecture and talk at VBKÖ 🌿🌱 🫧Lecture by Jose Mari Cuartero (University of the Philippines-Diliman) @jomscuartero 🫧Moderated by Renan Laru-an @rgll____ 📅 July 15, 2025 🕕 18:00-20:00 📍 VBKÖ Writing and publishing have been conscripted by the cultural logic of coloniality, which underpins gender, race, and class. However, as the prism of intersectionality shared by the legacies of feminism remains to be in an encounter with coloniality, what are the ways we can advance from such circumstances and even at the same time, escape from such a sociocultural entrapment? How do we begin to rhizomatically disrupt such seeming historical longevity of the patriarchal world history to manifest as slithering out to finally lay on the ground the intersectionality over and against such boundaries and restrictions? The lecture is about the story of Leona Florentino-a 19th-century prolific town poet from Northern Philippines and the mother of an anticolonial polymath, Isabelo de Los Reyes-whose rich poetic writings trace, and at the same time, embody what I call gift poems. The gift poems bear a writing culture at the heart of Spanish colonialism that draws a path towards decolonial feminism as seen in the poems, and its dynamic with the succeeding generations redeeming the Indigenous feminism at the point of the contact zone between Europe and the folk. In traversing such historical imagination, we also seize the vibrant materiality of such a story by recognizing the presence of a craft folk print that can be drawn from her archives, its precarious nature, and expanded kinship, which are stories told as entangled with animals, insects, pests, folk creatures, and the soil. 〰️✨THANK YOU, RENAN✨〰️ With the turn into a new year that demands fierce hope and tender strength of us all, we give warm thanks to Renan Laru-an for being with us in the last two years of Transition(s). Renan joined us in 2023 with the proposal of activating Loob within and through the  SAVVY  house – Loob as both direction and reorientation. As our artistic director, he continued the task of programme development and community building, while accompanying  SAVVY  Contemporary to new destinations. In the last two years, SAVVY has hosted numerous exhibitions, sound projects, performances, readings and talks, radio contributions, residency programmes as well as a series of workshops in our new regular neighbourhood programme  WEDDING AFFAIRS . All were conceived together, reflecting Renan’s vision: „We need a faith to the fantastic – what else could be the least uncanny of sensations in today’s anxieties but to be artistic? In an ongoing crisis of reunions, when we all navigate the coasts of the can and can’t, we carry art to its socius – to the obligatory field of reaching out.“ Dear Renan, we give thanks and wish you blessings and strength for your upcoming endeavors like the curation of the Philippine Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025. In this coming year, we – the team of  SAVVY  Contemporary with its executive co-directors, Lema Sikod and Lynhan Balatbat-Helbock – will allow ourselves (for the first time!) to slow down a bit in our programming in the first months of the year, to make space for more introspection, for listening to our own rippling and for re-attuning our antennas. We wish for all of your presence and inspiration in that process – so that our Loob can continue to conceive, create, and nourish other worlds. Photo by @marvin.systermans
