Our latest podcast is out reviewing nearly monarch brothers Ælfweard and Edwin, both of whom came unstuck in the reign of their half-brother Æthelstan, and possibly not by accident... Watch the full episode on YouTube/Spotify or list in the usual places. #history #podcast #monarchy #saxons #anglosaxons #kingsandqueens

Series 4 begins! We begin the Nearly Monarchs with Æthelwold of Last Kingdom fame - nephew to Alfred the Great, rival to his cousin Edward the Elder. Dismissed by the official histories but actually a genuine contender, though for Ali the first challenge will be the names... You can now watch the podcast on our YouTube channel, plus come and see us for a live show in Ludlow on Friday 21 August 19:00 (links in bio) #podcast #history #saxons #Æthelwold #LastKingdom #kingsandqueens

In our latest podcast we had a great with @emilyekmurdoch about her book Regina: The Queens Who Could Have Been - the women who would have ruled England if daughters instead of sons had been prioritised in the succession.

We are back! Series 4 is now underway, kicking off with an introductory episode explaining the concept of this series, our approach to scoring and what we think of counterfactual history (the 'what ifs'). #podcast #history #monarchy

This is what Ali looks like after recording five podcasts in a day! We’ve now started Series 4, but Ali might need some sleep before the next recording!

We are back in podcast land! Not technically the new series yet, but this time we review Offa of Mercia, the eighth-century king who built a famous Dyke, corresponded with Charlemagne and was almost the first King of England. Excitingly, you can now watch as well as listen to the podcast (either on Spotify or YouTube).

New series, new notebook (though only one of them will be featured in the series). Apologies for our recent absence but I’m now in full research mode for Series 4 reviewing all the nearly monarchs of England and the United Kingdom. Planning a new “first” episode on Offa later in the month then plan to get recording the first episodes of series 4 in March!
