🦅 Bjeloglavi sup (Gyps fulvus) uz to što je najveća ptica u Hrvatskoj, osobito je zanimljiv letač. Sposoban je satima ostati u zraku, gotovo bez ijednog zamaha krilima.
🌀 On je „pasivni jedriličar“ pri čemu se oslanja na termičke stupove, mase toplog zraka koji se zagrijava uz tlo i podiže u visinu. Sup kruži unutar tih stupova uspinjući se na željenu visinu odakle se dalje otisne i jedri kilometrima prema sljedećem toplinskom stupu.
💨 Raspon krila doseže mu 2,8 metara pri čemu ima ogromnu površinu za hvatanje zračnih struja. Krila su mu široka i završavaju karakterističnim „prstima“ koji mu omogućuju precizno manevriranje čime si osigurava let stabilnim čak i pri jakim udarima vjetra.
🦅 The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is not only the largest bird in Croatia but also a particularly fascinating flyer. It is capable of staying in the air for hours, with almost no wing flapping.
🌀 As a „passive glider“, it relies on thermal columns, masses of warm air that heat up near the ground and rise. The vulture circles within these columns, ascending to a desired altitude before gliding for kilometers toward the next thermal.
💨 Its wingspan reaches up to 2,8 meters, providing a massive surface area for catching air currents. Its wings are broad and end in characteristic „fingers“ that allow for precise maneuvering, ensuring a stable flight even during strong gusts of wind.

🏨 U prekrasnom atriju renovirane zgrade VUKA-e izložili smo 30 naših fotografija Velebita i njegovih divljih životinja. Ugodno smo razgovarali sa profesorima i studentima raznih smjerova o našem radu na jačanju populacija risova, jelena, medvjeda, divokoza, prirodnoj ispaši, introdukciji Taurusa na Ličko polje, promatračnica divljih životinja itd.
📆 Izložba ostaje postavljena još mjesec dana, do 8. lipnja svakim radnim danom od 6 do 21 sat. Ulaz je slobodan i besplatan za sve.
📷 Yesterday, we opened our photo collection at the Karlovac University of Applied Sciences.
🏨 In the beautiful atrium of the renovated VUKA building, we exhibited 30 of our photographs featuring Velebit and its diverse wildlife.
We had the pleasure of engaging with professors and students from various departments, discussing our work on strengthening populations of lynx, red deer, bears, and chamois, promoting natural grazing practices, the introduction of Tauros to the Lika Plains, our wildlife watching hides, etc.
📆 The exhibition will remain open for the next month, until June 8th, every working day from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The exhibition is open to the public and completely free of charge.

🐇 Iako na prvi pogled slični, zec i kunić imaju različite strategije preživljavanja u kršu. Na Velebitu, zec se oslanja na svoju brzinu i vrhunsku kamuflažu. Njegova glavna strategija je bijeg, a zaklon osigurava u udubljenjima u travi ili ispod grmlja. 🕳️ Za razliku od zeca, kunić u koristi pukotine u kršu i dublju zemlju ispod makije kako bi iskopao složene sustave podzemnih hodnika. To mu osigurava zaklon od ljetnih vrućina i ptica grabljivica.
🐇 Although similar at first glance, the hare and the rabbit have different survival strategies in the karst terrain. In the Velebit Mountains, the hare relies on its speed and superior camouflage. Its main strategy is flight, finding shelter in hollows in the grass or under bushes.
🕳️ Unlike the hare, the rabbit uses crevices in the karst and deeper soil beneath the macchia to dig complex systems of underground tunnels. This provides it with shelter from summer heat and birds of prey.

🐑🦎 Otok Dolin primjer je specifičnog suživota domaće stoke i autohtone divljači. Na tom području žive ovce koje svojom umjerenom ispašom na krškim proplancima igraju ključnu ulogu u održavanju ekosustava.
🌱 Pasući travu i nisko raslinje, one sprječavaju zarastanje otoka u gustu, neprohodnu makiju. Upravo takvi očišćeni proplanci omogućuju gušterima da se nesmetano sunčaju na kamenim površinama.
🔄 Na primjeru otoka Dolina možemo vidjeti kako tradicionalna ekstenzivna ispaša izravno podupire bioraznolikost krša.
🐑🦎 The island of Dolin is an example of a specific coexistence between domestic livestock and indigenous wildlife. The sheep inhabiting this area play a key role in maintaining the ecosystem through moderate grazing on the karst pastures.
🌱 By grazing on grass and low vegetation, they prevent the island from becoming overgrown with dense, impenetrable macchia. It is precisely these cleared pastures that allow lizards to bask undisturbed on the rocky surfaces.
🔄 The example of the island of Dolin demonstrates how traditional extensive grazing directly supports the biodiversity of the karst terrain.

Veliki dio kolekcije su i fotografije životinja, koje samo rijetki imaju sreće vidjeti uživo, a ovo je prilika da ih, posredno, pogledamo i porazgovaramo o njima.
🤝 Suorganizator izložbe je VUKA (@veleucilisteukarlovcu ), jedino učilište u Hrvatskoj koje nudi Lovstvo i zaštitu prirode, studij koji spaja ova dva pristupa prirodi.

Vraćanjem ključnih vrsta u prirodu i uklanjanjem barijera na vodotokovima jača se snaga prirode da se sama obnavlja. Očuvanje i obnova tresetišta, močvara i prašuma omogućuje se tlu i biljkama da apsorbiraju velike količine ugljika. Divljija staništa otpornija su na poplave, suše i druge ekstremne klimatske pojave.

Obilježavanje teritorija urinom ključan je mehanizam socijalne komunikacije kod lisica. Njihovo mokrenje nije nasumično, već strateški usmjereno na prijenos specifičnih informacija. Za ostavljanje mirisa koriste istaknute objekte poput panjeva i kamenja, a sam urin sadrži visoku koncentraciju sumpornih spojeva koji djeluju poput „biološke osobne iskaznice“. Prema njima druge životinje mogu raspoznati podatke o spolu jedinke, njezinoj starosti, zdravstvenom stanju i reproduktivnom statusu.

Territory marking with urine is a key mechanism of social communication in foxes. Their urination is not random, but strategically aimed at transmitting specific information. They use prominent objects such as stumps and rocks to leave their scent, and the urine itself contains a high concentration of sulfur compounds that act as a „biological ID card“. Based on these markers, other animals can discern data regarding the individual's sex, age, health condition, and reproductive status.

🦌 Prošli smo tjedan u suradnji s upraviteljima lovišta Golo trlo ispustili 𝐜̌𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐢 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐣𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞 𝐣𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐜̌𝐧𝐨𝐠, što je naše prvo ispuštanje na ovom području. 🐾 Prilikom hoda, medvjed spušta cijelo stopalo na tlo, baš kao i mi ljudi. Njegov otisak osobito podsjeća na ljudsko stopalo, ali s pet oštrih kandži koje ne uvlači. Tako uvijek ostavlja jasan trag u snijegu. ⛰️ Kreće se karakterističnim dvokorakom, što znači da istovremeno pomiče obje noge s iste strane. Ovakav način hoda štedi mu energiju čime si osigurava da prijeđe goleme udaljenosti Velebita.

🐾 When walking, the brown bear places its entire sole on the ground, much like we humans do. Its footprint particularly resembles a human foot, but with five sharp claws that are never retracted, always leaving a clear mark in the snow.
⛰️ The bear moves with a characteristic „pacing“ gait, meaning it moves both legs on the same side of its body simultaneously. This way of walking conserves energy, allowing it to cover the vast distances of the Velebit Mountains wilderness with ease.

While the lynx uses its broad paws to silently sneak up on its prey at night, the wildcat lowers its back paw into the impression of its front paw to sneak perfectly. It is these superb adaptations that make them very successful hunters in our Velebit Mountains.
