Today, we honor the lives of our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The red handprint symbolizes the silence forced upon them. The violence, the stolen voices, the stolen futures. We will not be silent. We will not forget. Stories of Deer Woman have always resonated with me. There are a few different versions of her history, but she was always a symbol of strength, beauty and protection. Deer Woman is a defender of women and children. After being brutally attacked by men and left for dead, a deer discovered her and decided to lay with her so she would not die alone. This grabbed the attention of the spirits who felt her pain, her anger and her sorrow. To keep other women and children from experiencing this horror, they revived her as Deer Woman to defend them from evil. This is why I see her as a totem for MMIW. From the NIWRC Website: Today is May 5, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives. We wear red to honor those we have lost and to demand the justice they deserve. No more stolen relatives. On some reservations, Native women are murdered at 10 times the national average. This is a crisis and it demands action. We cannot fully count what is being ignored. Because of limited data, there is no reliable nationwide count of how many Native women go missing or are murdered each year. Invisibility is not an accident. Native women deserve safety. Native women deserve visibility. Native women deserve justice.
