Introducing New Directions, a new strand of afrosonic Film Club dedicated to short films and documentaries by emerging Nigerian filmmakers. Caught between an inconsistent lover, a cynical sister, and the haunting of her own mind, she journeys — through surreal imagery and visual symbols — toward acceptance. ⚡️ Everything Lasts And Nothing Ends by @retepoki & Nosazemn Agbontean - Zainab is in Lagos to spread the word and chop life. Amaka is ready to leave the only city she has ever known. When the spirit of Lagos brings them together, it also threatens to pull them apart. An unstoppable force meets an immovable one. 🕯️ God’s Wife by @dikaofoma - A young widow, still in mourning, is propositioned by her late husband's brother. When she refuses, he threatens to have her removed from her own home. Rete Poki, a talented photographer, director, and filmmaker, has captivated audiences with his unique storytelling and immersive creative process. Inspired by the vibrant energy of Lagos, @retepoki ’s recent short film, “Everything Lasts and Nothing Ends,” reflects the city’s intense desire and dynamic nature. Drawing influences from Wong Kar-Wai’s films and photographers Deana Lawson and Renell Medrano, Poki blends cinematic and photographic techniques to create powerful visual narratives. His favorite project, “Every Nigga Is A Star,” explores an alternative reality of black boys growing up with affirmations and love instead of trauma. With a meticulous approach to his craft, Rete Poki continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling, making him a visionary artist to watch.
