This is a memorial coral reef made from your loved ones ashes that literally turns death into new life in the ocean.
Please note for our demonstration reef we did not include any actual ashes and we instead used sand.
Resting Reef combines human or pet ashes with local natural materials like volcanic sand and calcium carbonate to create the reefs which are scientifically designed to encourage coral regrowth.
After successful placements in North Bali, the sites now show 17x more biodiversity compared to nearby degraded areas. Resting Reef is now expanding globally, placing full-scale reefs in Indonesia and other locations.
Right now, 90% of the world’s coral reefs are at risk and these ecosystems support 25% of all marine life.
With Resting Reef, a loved one’s final act could be helping to rebuild an entire ecosystem!

We hope the new year has been kind to you so far. After a few weeks of recharging in different corners of the world, our team is gently coming back to work. As we look ahead to 2025, there’s so much on the horizon, and we can’t wait to share it all with you.
Here’s what we’re looking forward to:
🪸 Collaborating with local builders to craft and place our Pet Memorial Reefs in #Bali. We only launched this unique service a few months ago and we’re so grateful to the pet owners who’ve entrusted us with creating a legacy for their pets. 🐾 Guiding pet owners through every step of this deeply personal journey—from ash collection to the moment their memorial reef is placed underwater.
🤍 Partnering with #veterinarians and pet startups to offer support at all stages of a pet’s life, because planning for how you’ll care for your pet in the afterlife is just as thoughtful. We want to normalise thinking about pet aftercare.
🔎 Continue monitoring our pilot reefs for #marinebiodiversity results and sharing the stories of how our reefs are making an impact.
This year is about continuing the work we started while building meaningful connections with our community. Thank you for being a part of this startup story with us.
🐠Today marks an exciting milestone as we share underwater updates on our reefs’ progress!
Thanks to the dedicated and close monitoring efforts by our Head of Restoration and Conservation, @zachboakes , we recorded 46 fish species thriving on our memorial reefs—that’s 4x higher biodiversity than nearby degraded reefs!
In just six months, the reefs are already covered with coralline and turf algae, laying the groundwork for future coral growth.
Imagine what’s possible in a year! 🪸

For this second snippet from our webinar “Regenerative Death: Shifting Perceptions & Challenging Traditional Practices,” we hear from @guyhayler , co-founder of @blueearthsummit , one of the UK’s leading platforms for sustainability, innovation, and impact-driven business.
In this conversation, Guy shares why sustainability has become such an essential aspect of contemporary life and why this shift also extends into deathcare.
A powerful message coming from a leader who recognises Resting Reef’s work as part of the forward-thinking initiatives creating meaningful impact within this space 🌞
Can we just appreciate this beautiful illustration created for Resting Reef? ✨
It was made as part of our participation in the Afterlives Festival! a gathering in the UK dedicated to opening conversations around end of life, celebration of life, and death, bringing together different thinkers, creatives, and proposals that approach how we relate to mortality.
As part of the festival, Resting Reef will be presenting our full-size memorial reefs and sharing our vision for regenerative memorialisation and the importance of planning ahead.
The festival will take place across Newcastle, Exeter, and Redbridge throughout May and June, and we’re truly looking forward to seeing you there 💙

Proud to share that we have been nominated for the @boatinternational Ocean Awards 2026 in the Innovation Award category 🌊✨
This recognition means so much to us because it celebrates ideas, services, and ways of working that are designed not at the expense of the ocean, but in service of it. From the beginning, we have believed that new ways of remembering and creating meaning can also contribute to the health and future of our marine environment💙🌍
Thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in our journey.

⚰️For generations, we followed the same path.
Not always because it felt right, but because it was the only one we knew.
At Resting Reef, we’re part of a new way forward reimagining tradition 💙
