At first glance, you might think our shorelines don’t have a plastic problem… but take a closer look and you can’t unsee just how much microplastic there really is 😅 Manly Cove is one of Sydney’s most consistent microplastic hotspot sites. Since 2018 AUSMAP has been sampling at this site with the help over over 700 volunteers! During that time, microplastic pollution levels at Manly Cove have increased 7-fold! Want to see the problem first hand and help us take our monthly survey? Join us this Sunday: 📍Manly Cove, West Esplanade Meet on the beach in front of the Manly Art Gallery and Museum 📆Sunday 3rd May ⏰ 10am - 12pm For more information and to register see the link in bio. #ausmap #microplastics #plasticpollution #pollution #australia

Such a great couple of days on our Reshaping Waste program! 🌏☀️ Working with our favourites in the biz; the wonderful @kimbriki waste educators, and the @bush_to_bowl nursery crew! 🖤🌱 We learnt (and saw first hand) what happens to our Waste once it’s left our curb side bins… This inspiring operation run by @beachescouncil is more than a “tip”; here they are able to recover up to 80% of resources, recycling, repurposing and selling perfectly good items back to the community. ♻️♻️♻️ At Bush to Bowl we had the pleasure of tasting some Native produce, as well as pitching in to propagate and prepare countless tube-stock for sale; supporting Indigenous food sovereignty. ✊🏼 In the afternoons and evenings the crew has enjoyed some beach swims, coastal walks and downtime to play games, eat delicious food and unwind. 😌

Our Reshaping Waste Program kicked off in style today with a cleanup led by the team from @sydney_by_kayak 🩵🛶 The students removed a whopping 6KGS of plastic debris from the harbour and learnt about all the Conservation initiatives that take place in Lavender Bay. 🌏🪣 After lunch they travelled to Narrabeen; completing a plastic-free shopping challenge and conducting a waste audit before settling in. After clocking off for the day they enjoyed a high tide swim and chill time at the beach.💧 Another amazing group of students excited for 5 days of hands-on, solutions-driven activities! 🫶🏼🌱

We’ve officially kicked off our Reshaping Waste program, and the first 48 hours have been a powerful journey from understanding the problem to getting hands-on with the solutions. 🪣🧤 We started with a kayak cleanup on Sydney Harbour. Seeing marine pollution up close and learning that it isn’t just “rubbish,” it’s a direct threat to our local ecosystems. 🥺🥺 It was heartening to be able to do our bit, and also learn about the incredible work SIMS are doing to increase biodiversity and harbour health through their @livingseawalls project! 🦀🦪🐟🐌 We took that awareness straight to the aisles of Woolies, navigating the challenge of a completely plastic-free food shop for the week.🛒🛍️ Today, Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the massive scale of waste management and the magic of composting. 🪱🪏 We finished these impactful two days with a hands-on Reshaping Waste workshop! We sorted, shredded and transformed plastic lids into functional items like pens and combs. ♻️🪮 Seeing the circular economy in action was a real highlight.✨ Ending both days with some downtime at the beach has been the perfect way to reset. It’s a beautiful reminder that while the waste problem is big, small actions can go a long way to protecting what we love. 🌏🫶🏼
