Commons in Design Conference 15.–17.02.2023 Workshop 2 “Open-Source Para-Structures”, Juan Gomez & Gregoire Rousseau 16.02.2023, 16:00–17:30 o’clock As of 2022, 18 billion devices use WiFi to create local area networks mainly to connect to the internet. It is now possible to seamlessly create a WiFi network thanks to devices such as Arduino’s, Raspberry PI and even consumer products such as smart phones. WiFi is part of the assemblages of networks that makes part of our daily life and is like an ambient network which has been invisibilised since its creation. What are the potential uses of WiFi as a creative medium? How to foster technological agency through an ambient network? How can Wifi shape and form common spaces and inclusivity? These are the questions that Open-Source Para-Structures aim to look into. To participate in the workshop, please register via our website commons-in-design.ch. Participation is free of charge! The conference is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). #hgk_fhnw #designresearch @hgk_fhnw #icdp_research #commonsindesign

Commons in Design Conference 15.–17.02.2023 Workshop 1 “Errant Design: An Unbounded Practice of Commoning and Design”, Max Stearns & Nathalie Attallah 16.02.2023, 16:00 –17:30 o’clock Errant Design is a practice of commoning and design built on an intersectional feminist Ethics of Care (Nelling, 1984), an In-Process and ‘deep time’ sense of response-ability for our design/ing (Macfarlane, 2019), and modes of collaboration designed for Becoming-With our designs, design materials/resources, and fellow designers (Haraway, 2016; Glissant, 1990). In this workshop, Max and Nathalie invite participants to begin playing in the kind of worldbuilding Errant Design operates in. Through the process of world creation, collaboration, and decision-making, participants will engage in the ways Errant Design might inform and enhance how we engage commons and commoning by design. To participate in the workshop, please register via our website commons-in-design.ch. Participation is free of charge! The conference is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). #hgk_fhnw #designresearch @hgk_fhnw #icdp_research #commonsindesign

Commons in Design Conference, 15.–17. February 2023 Free participation, please register via our website In our conference, we aim to explore the relevance of commons and commoning within design as a discipline and field of research. It aims to shed light on the complexity of commons and commoning from a design perspective and to present future models and scenarios pointing towards a more sustainable, just and peaceful world. Central to this is the question of how principles of commoning can benefit design processes, methods, and ways of working, ultimately changing the way designers position themselves. We are excited to have 28 international contributors from 16 nations to present their work at our Commons in Design Conference! 4 Keynotes, 15 Paper Presentations, 7 Poster Presentations, 2 Workshops The international conference is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Registration is possible until February 10, 2023. The conference is organized by Christine Schranz (Conference Chair / Scientific Lead) and Charleen Elberskirch (Conference Coordination). Commons in Design Conference 15.–17.02.2023 Keynote 4 “Low tech is the new high tech”, Zoe Romano 17.02.2023, 09:15–10:15 o’clock Zoe Romano is a craftivist, independent researcher and lecturer focused on social innovation, women in tech and open design. She co-founded WeMake Makerspace in 2014 while working at Arduino. She’s now a consultant on R&D and eu-funded digital social innovation projects. She takes part in research/activism activities around e-textiles and digital fabrication. The internet allowed us to access a database of knowledge, academic and informal, in continuous expansion which is composing a new, hybrid territory, an onlife ecosystem, inhabited by people who look at technology with an unusual awareness. They have the skills to create beyond the drifts of hyper-design and are curious about the body of knowledge beyond the boundaries of academic design, towards a low tech approach which investigates lesser known local technologies, where indigenousness is reformulated as an evolutionary extension of life in symbiosis with nature. Commons in Design Conference 15.–17.02.2023 Keynote 3 “Weaving collective futures. Holism in practice”, Holly McQuillan 16.02.2023, 10:15–11:15 o’clock With 15 years researching sustainable fashion and textiles, today Holly McQuillan’s research advocates for a new understanding of the relationship between designer and system, material, textile and form which is oriented through the lens of holistic circularity. Holly McQuillan's research critically addresses the systems that clothe the body and our environment, taking a holistic, post-anthropocentric, and material-driven approach to design, making and use practices, across material, interaction, and ecological scales. This approach requires deep collaboration and a common understanding that can only be achieved if the materials, tools, methods and perspectives are open to all who wish to engage with these sometimes difficult practices and the conversations that surround them.
