Founded in 2025 by Artistic Director Minnie Lane, Renversons takes its name from the ballet step renversé: reversal, transformation, upheaval. Born from ballet and committed to reshaping it for today, the company is interrogating traditional pathways and reimagining structures that better serve artists. Next up: Origins at New York Live Arts 📍 April 3 & 4, 7:30pm The mixed-bill program features four new contemporary ballet works by Minnie Lane and guest choreographer Adriana Pierce, exploring community, ritual, queer mythology, and conceptual storytelling, while expanding ballet’s partnering and narrative frameworks. Renversons centers dancers’ financial, physical, emotional, and artistic well-being as foundational to the creative process — a structural commitment that aligns with broader conversations around sustainability and equity in the field. 📣 Stay tuned: DDP will be sharing a DDP Talks To interview with Minnie Lane later this month. 🎥 Video of Artistic Director Minnie Lane and Dancers Sara Jumper and Cassie Punzo, Edited by Rosie Elliott

At Ballet Academy East in New York City, the six women dancers of @renversonsdance quickly switch between Keds, ballet slippers, and pointe shoes during a run-through of the group’s upcoming performance. Like many project-based companies, Renversons is made up of freelancers; they have a few hours to run through the ballets and work out the kinks before their rented-studio time is up. But they dance with a single-minded purpose as they prepare for the company’s first official season. Origins, a mixed bill featuring works by artistic director @minnie.lane and @adriprc , opens April 3 and 4 at @nylivearts . The life of an average freelancer isn’t easy, from inconsistent income and rehearsal schedules to paying for classes, health care, and other necessities that full-time companies usually provide. Lane explains how the company is designed to uplift the freelance community at the link in our bio. 💕 📝: Amy Brandt 📸: The dancers of Renversons, in costumes by @loecarmen . Building a company from the ground up requires more than artistic vision—it requires a commitment to values. In our latest DDP Talks To, Minnie Lane shares how she is preparing for Renversons’ inaugural 2026 season while centering dancer well-being and equitable practices. From investing personal funds to ensure fair dancer pay to securing in-kind support and building a board that includes working artists, Ms. Lane is exploring new approaches to sustainable company leadership. She also challenges the scarcity mindset that often shapes the dance field, and reinforces that collaboration, resource-sharing, and community-building ultimately strengthen the entire ecosystem. Bury Your Gaze was built through deep collaboration between Minnie Lane and Emily DeMaioNewton, blending Minnie’s choreography and Emily’s poetry to create a shared world. Emily’s writing shapes the narrative and emotional landscape of the piece, while the movement brings that language to life in the body. Together, they developed a queer origin story through an ongoing exchange of text, image, and physicality. The work was developed during a residency at Moulin/Belle @moulinbelleperigord in France, where this world began to take form. Catch Bury Your Gaze, with live poetry reading by Emily, as part of Origins this Friday and Saturday, April 3–4 at New York Live Arts! 📸: @nicolemaria_creative

In our latest DDP Talks To, choreographer Minnie Lane reflects on how reversing traditional roles in ballet can reveal details of the form that often go unnoticed. While choreographing Bury Your Gaze, Lane observed how pointe work naturally draws the eye—even when the dancer is the supporting partner—exposing how deeply our attention has been trained by ballet’s traditional gender roles. It’s a reminder that female leadership often reveals the unseen structures of the field: from overlooked technique and transitions to the hidden labor that sustains the art form, including childcare and the unpaid work of preparing pointe shoes.
