published > @paperspace.magazine > Issue 24: Less is More > RENEW: IN CONVERSATION WITH SUKUMAR NATARAJAN What does it mean to think of humans as part of the global ecosystem? This summer, I had the opportunity to interview Sukumar Natarajan, head of the RENEW research centre [ @renew_uob ] at @bathenganddes / @uniofbath for the 24th Issue of @paperspace.magazine . What started as a discussion about incorporating regenerative design at a student project level, evolved into deeper discussion about shifting narratives and humans as nature. A glimpse from our RENEW Away Day, half a day of team-building activities at Bath City Farm who were an amazing host, and the second half developing our centre’s manifesto. Lot’s of hard work of farming in the sun to help keep the pond area clean and tidy. Also petting some friendly animals, we loved the ponies! 🐏 🐄 🐣

Recycling tyres? What benefits can we reap from recycling tyres in the construction industry? Many, as shown today by Dr. Malgorzata Pajak, our visiting speaker from the Silesian University of Technology, Poland, hosted by our own member Dr. Taghried Abdel-Magid. Dr. Pajak gave an exciting talk on using a by-product of recycled tyres in FRC “Application of the recycled steel fibres in concrete structures subjected to dynamic and quasi-static loadings”, this is yet another example of regenerating resources in engineering practices. #renew #universityofbath #uk #regerativedesign #designengineering

So what is Regenerative Engineering and Design? Glimpses of the RENEW Manifesto Mind Meld, where specialists came together from different sectors of academia and industry to put together the research centre’s manifesto, to define our scope, challenges, goals, and to achieve a holistic understanding of Regenerative Engineering and Design. Stay tuned for our centre’s Manifesto #regenerativeengineering #regenerativeagriculture #bathuni #bathuniversity #designengineering

The first lecture organised by RENEW. Professors Murilo’s exciting talk about “A deep journey into the permeability assessment of key engineering materials” What do a face mask, a concrete wall, a fertilizer grain, a packaging film, a catalytic filter, and a tissue scaffold have in common? Prof. Murilo currently holds the positions of professor in the graduation course of Chemical Engineering, and senior researcher and coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Environmental Technology at the University of Ribeirão Preto (UNAERP), Brazil. Stay posted for more videos. #chemicalengineering #engineeringdesign #universityofbath #renew
