Just posted an essay about the possible pitfalls of magical entanglement: /p/a-sensitive-topic ”Some proponents of outwardly directed magic argue that it can be used ethically under specific circumstances, particularly when the goal is to protect or uplift others. For instance, protection spells, blessings, or rituals aimed at fostering ”social justice” can be seen as positive applications of magical influence. In such cases, the intent is not to dominate or control, but to create a safer or more equitable environment. But even in these instances, practitioners must carefully consider the consequences of their actions. Are they truly addressing the root of the issue, or simply imposing their will on a situation they may not fully understand? Basically: How can we be so sure that we actually know what we want? And especially if the focus is not on ourselves but on an abstracted third party who might be even less in touch with him/her/itself? Are you willing to get ”karmically” entangled in the web of wyrd/weird of someone or something else?” #occulture #thefenriswolf #carlabrahamsson

In today’s MAGIC MONDAY post at our Patreon, Vanessa writes about recent outings and rune work in the deep forests of Småland: /posts/magic-monday-cut-157965558 ”I had synchronistically brought this postcard of Oden with me, having quickly grabbed a small stack of images from a pile on my cut-up table at home. Oden just happened to be there! Perfect. I pulled some cut-ups from a pouch I use as my portable cut-up station and glued them into my magical book. Then I read them out loud to Carl, Kvilleken, and the ether. A wonderful thing about cut-ups is after you paste them down, if you read them aloud, they work like spells. No matter what they say, it is a magical working in itself, just the act of cutting up in this way, and when you read the words and phrases aloud, it sends your intention out into the universe as well as implanting it into your own unconscious, where it gets to work at making your magic happen, just like a sigil.” Join us for more magical stuff – every week! #occulture #vanessasinclair #carlabrahamsson

TIME FOR ANOTHER GREAT CLASS… ”Expand Your Art or Writing Practice Using the Cut-up Technique of David Bowie and William Burroughs”, with Dr. Vanessa Sinclair & Author Carl Abrahamsson, Begins May 10! Sign up for the class here: /classes/p/make-your-own-magical-artwork-using-the-cut-up-technique-of-david-bowie-and-william-burroughs-with-dr-vanessa-sinclair-and-author-carl-abrahamsson Four Week Class Taught Online Via Zoom, Sundays, May 10 - May 31, 2026, 1:00 - 2:30pm ET (NYC Time) PLEASE NOTE: Classes will be recorded and archived for students who cannot make that time. Dada instigator Tristan Tzara created “accidental poems” by cutting words from a newspaper, putting them into a hat, and pulling them out one by one to create poetry by chance. At the Beat Hotel in Paris, creative partners William Burroughs and Brion Gysin took this method and elaborated upon it, cutting up not only words but images, sounds, and film. David Bowie collided with William Burroughs and integrated the cut-up method into his way of writing song lyrics. A master of cutting up identity, Bowie also played with the performative aspects of persona, gender, and sexuality.

In this class, Dr. Vanessa Sinclair and Carl Abrahamsson will review the ways various artists have worked with cut-up techniques over the past century, while also sharing the ways they’ve integrated the cut-up method into their own creative, writing, and magical practices. The wonderful thing about cut-ups is that anyone can do them. The cut-up may be applied to any medium: word, image, sound, video, film, fashion, and performance art – even identity – may be cut up and rearranged to create something new and unexpected. Whether you are new to the realms of art, writing, and magic or are a seasoned practitioner, this course will introduce you to fundamental ways of working with cut-up techniques to manifest your desire through the creation of unique artworks. Participants will be encouraged to create and share their own art or writing (if desired, not required). There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions.
