Less than a week until the Suffs proshot airs on PBS! 💜
So to get ready, here’s who’s who in the cast, and a short sentence, (or two), about the historical figures they portray! 🔥
Look them up 📣
Suffs airs on PBS on May 8 at 9pm ET. It will then be available to stream on PBS through July 31, 2026.
If you’re in NYC, Town Hall is hosting an early screening of Suffs followed by a talk back, and a special performance by the cast on Monday, May 4th at 7pm.

**Adding an edit to the Dr White page: there was a Dr William Alanson White who was the superintendent of St Elizabeths Hospital.**

The Suffs National Tour has officially started 🎉📣
Some of you had asked if the tour was stopping in the States where Ruza had spoken. So here is a little list :)
For most of these states, I have shared posts with more information about Ruza's speeches and details about her visit to that state. I realized I never made a post about Ruza in Massachusetts or Ohio, so those will be coming in the next few weeks/months!
Where will you be seeing the Suffs tour? 💜✊🏻
(Also note that I use Ruza Wenclawska here, but if you want to look up articles about Ruza in your state, you need to search "Rose Winslow"! And I have also shared a post about Ruza's different names last year!)
And as always with research, if I find out about another State where Ruza spoke, I will share that information!!
🗳️🔥

The Suffs National Tour is marching onto its third city in Ohio this week, so it's about time I share a post about Ruza Wenclawska in Ohio!
She spoke on Dayton and Cincinnati in January 1914.
In Dayton, she spoke at the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church which was destroyed by a fire in 1920.
In Cincinnati, she spoke at the Emery Auditorium. The theater still stands today and is home to the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati. It is just a few blocks away from the Aronoff Center for the Arts where @suffsmusical is playing this week 🎭
Articles are from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Dayton Herald, Cincinnati Post, Dayton Daily News.

So you watched Suffs and want to look them up? Here’s where you can learn more!!
One of the best parts about my suffs experience has actually been going beyond what’s on stage. @shainataub created this magical starting point but there’s so much she couldn’t include (hey, I’d still be sat for the 5-hour version), which is where we get to jump in! @rememberingruza and I have loved traveling to the sites and archives, but for us it started in our own apartments with the internet. There are so many public resources and books you can get from your local library! I can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with these characters and learn more about them, their triumphs, their flaws, their lives after the 19th amendment. Tune in tonight at 9pm EST @pbsgreatperformances + available for free streaming 🎞️
Ruza Wenclawska wanted to act on Broadway (and she did). And this year, two former Ruzas are nominated for Tony Awards!! 🔥
Hannah Cruz, who played Ruza at the Public, is nominated for her performance in Chess. 🌟
Stephanie Hsu, who played Ruza in early workshops, is nominated for her performance in The Rocky Horror Show. 🌟

NEW PHOTO OF RUZA!!!!!
@janetlindenmuth found this photo while looking through the Doris Stevens papers at the Schlesinger Library today!
There is nothing written in the back so we don't know what year it's from or where it was taken.
Thank you, Janet, for sharing this stunning photo of Ruza!
I love research!! This is very cool!! I am nerding out 😍

Ruza Wenclawska (Rose Winslow) spoke in quite a few towns in Massachusetts in October 1915 to help the state campaign for the 1915 suffrage referendum that was on the ballot in Massachusetts in November 1915.

Happy Sports Day 🏈
Here is an article from July 1913 where they describe Ruza Wenclawska losing patience when her suffrage speech kept being interrupted by baseball fans!
I've been thinking about this article quite a lot since @janetlindenmuth shared it with me, and I had to share it with you all! Ah, Ruza!
Thinking of Haley and me going to see a baseball game in the afternoon and Suffs in the evening in Seattle 🤭
Enjoy the superbowl, enjoy the Winter Olympics!

On this day in 1878, Katharine Martha Houghton Hepburn was born.
Katharine Houghton Hepburn was a social reformer and leader of the suffrage movement.
She went to college at Bryn Mawr where she received her B.A. in History and political science, and then at Radcliffe College where she received a Master’s in chemistry and physics. She married Dr. Thomas Hepburn and moved with him to Hartford. The Hepburns had six children, including famed actress Katharine Hepburn.
Katharine Houghton Hepburn organized the Hartford Equal Franchise League in 1913. She then became the president of the Connecticut Women Suffrage Association before joining the National Woman’s Party. She met with President Wilson in 1913 and picketed the White House in 1917.
During her time with the CWSA, she organized suffrage rallies, wrote pamphlets, and gave several speeches.
Prior and after the ratification of the 19th amendment, she fought for access to birth control. In 1916, she joined Margaret Sanger’s movement and became the American Birth Control League’s legislative chair (the League then became Planned Parenthood). She was most prominent in the birth control movement in the 1930s, when she spoke at rallies and events. She appeared before a Congressional committee and several state legislatures.
She also fought on behalf of other causes, including for women’s right to serve on a jury (which was still restricted for many years after women won the right to vote) and for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. In working with all of these causes, her guiding principle seemed to be the pursuit of what she once described as “a morality based on intelligence and ideas, not on fear.”
She died on March 17, 1951 in West Hartford, Connecticut. She was 73.
In 1994, Katharine Houghton Hepburn was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame and included in the field of "Reformers."

On May 2, 1914, the first Connecticut suffrage parade was held in Hartford. Suffragists from around the state traveled to Hartford for the parade.
The parade states in front of the state capitol building and then passes under the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. It then continued to High St, to Main St, to Elm St. The parade ended with a mass meeting at Park Casino. Katharine Houghton Hepburn, Emily Pierson, and Ruza Wenclawska (Rose Winslow) were among the speakers.

Ruza Wenclawska (Rose Winslow) spoke in Hartford, Connecticut, in May 1914 and in March 1915.
The Hartford Suffrage Parade took place on May 2, 1914. Ruza Wenclawska was one of the speakers at the suffrage meeting following the parade.
She went back to Hartford in March 1915 to speak during suffrage hearings at the stage capitol.
I will share more about the Hartford suffrage parade itself in a separate post, as well as some of the connectitut suffragists.
Ruza Wenclawska also spoke in Norwich, CT in March 1914, and there is a post about that on my grid - from January 2025.
