Untitled delves into the inception of identity papers stems from a need by dominant structures to categorize and control the members of a given group. In this work, Tinhinane Zeraoui draws from the tattoos seen in Marc Garanger’s photographs of Algerian villages, images infamous for the defiant gazes of women, humiliated by the act of being photographed.
By applying these marks onto her own identity card, multiplied, she seeks to channel this spirit of resistance within a system of identification that claims to ensure security at the expense of individual freedoms, the freedom to move, to reside, to exist beyond imposed borders.
