The After Hours: How This Twilight Zone Episode Influenced Severance
In “The After Hours”, a Twilight Zone episode, Marsha White, while shopping for a gift, visits a mysterious ninth floor that shouldn’t exist and buys a gold thimble from a strange saleswoman.
In Severance S02E09, also titled “The After Hours”, Harmony Cobel mentions Miss Marsha White to a guard, adding that she’s looking for a gold thimble. The guard replies, “Specialties department” — a direct nod to the Twilight Zone episode.
Marsha’s ninth-floor journey feels like an early echo of Lumon’s severed floor. Mannequins, an elevator, a manager, a stairway, and even a familiar clock — many visual parallels appear in Severance.
When told the floor doesn’t exist, Marsha grows uneasy — until she discovers the saleswoman is a mannequin. Locked inside the store overnight, she learns that the mannequins are alive and take turns living among humans for one month each year. Having overstayed her turn and forgotten her true identity, she reluctantly returns to her place on display, her brief taste of freedom now just a fading memory.
