đ The Global Plastics Treaty Is On Life Support.
The negotiations between 184 countries have hit a wall. Last yearâs talks ended with no treaty, no reductions, and no real progress. But the fight isn't overâtalks are due to resume this year, and our voices are more crucial than ever. A weak treaty means plastic production continues to flood our oceans and food chain with microplastics, leaving the cleanup burden on communities, not producers.
đ§ What's Causing the Deadlock?
A key reason is heavy industry lobbying. Fossil fuel and chemical industry representatives have been at the talks in growing numbers, working to delay or weaken essential measuresâlike caps on plastic production.
The goal is a treaty covering the entire life cycle of plastic. We can't let lobbying derail this.
â We Need Our Government to Push Harder.
Your voice can help break the deadlock. Let's tell the New Zealand government to champion a strong treaty.
đ CALL TO ACTION: Email the Minister for the Environment NOW.

Subject: Champion a Strong Global Plastics Treaty
Message you can copy:
âNew Zealand must champion a strong Global Plastics Treaty that caps plastic production and holds polluters accountable. Our Pacific environment and fisheries depend on it. Please break the deadlock at the upcoming negotiations.â

đ What's in Your Fish Might Shock You
Microplastics arenât just polluting our oceansâtheyâre entering the food chain, and possibly our bodies. Pacific fisheries, are now on the frontlines of this invisible crisis.
Why should you care?
đ Seafood safety is public health.
đ Ocean health is planetary health.
đ Our choicesâand our voicesâmatter.
The Pacific nations contributes the least to plastic pollution but suffers the most. Itâs time for global accountability. A strong #PlasticsTreaty could help turn the tideâreducing plastic production, improving waste management, and protecting marine life and human health.
What you can do:
đ Share this post to spread awareness.
đŁď¸ Use your voiceâcall for a meaningful #PlasticsTreaty.
đ Reduce single-use plastic in your daily life.
đ Support sustainable and local fisheries where possible.
Our plate. Our planet. Our future.
Letâs protect both. đ

đ Turning Trash into Treasure: A NZ Solution to the Textile Waste Crisis! đ§ą
Sometimes, the most powerful solutions come from reimagining what "waste" really is. Right here in Aotearoa, a fantastic example is building momentum!
Canterbury company ImpacTex is tackling the huge problem of textile waste by transforming old clothes and fabrics into versatile, high-performance building panels. âťď¸
Why is this so exciting for the reuse movement?
Circular Economy in Action: This is the ultimate "closed-loop" thinking. Instead of ending up in landfill, textiles get a bold new life as insulation and acoustic panels.
Local Ingenuity: It's a powerful reminder that Kiwi creativity is leading the way in developing practical, commercial solutions to our environmental challenges.
Every reuse choice, big or small, builds a better future.

Coca-Cola's plastic use just got even worse. đ
Their packaging reached a staggering 7.95 billion pounds in 2024.
Let that sink in: that's nearly one pound of plastic for every single person on Earth.
đ At the same time as this 21% surge, they've abandoned key packaging goals.
Oceana warns this trajectory could lead to 1.3 billion pounds of Coca-Cola plastic entering our oceans every single year by 2030.
This isn't corporate progress. It's pollution on a planetary scale.
⨠But the real solution isn't in their boardroomâit's in your hand.
Every water refill in your bottle, is a powerful, direct vote against this tide of waste. You are proving a better system exists, right here in our communities.

Is Microplastics Leaching into Your Coffee? Yes đ§
New research shows a single disposable cup can release THOUSANDS of microplastic particles into your drink. Yikes. đł
Think your âpaperâ cup is just⌠paper? đâ
Think again.
These cups are made with paper sheets lined with a hidden layer of plastic (HDPE) to hold your drink. This makes them waterproofâbut also nearly impossible to recycle. âťď¸đŤ
So most end up in landfill, breaking down into microplastics that pollute our whenua.
And it gets more personal. đł
If you drink just three hot drinks a day from disposables, you could ingest up to 75,000 microplastic particles, ions, and heavy metals over time. Long-term exposure has been linked to serious health risks.
But your daily brew doesnât have to come with a side of plastic. But your daily ritual doesnât have to cost the earth. âď¸đ
Switching to a reusable cup is one of the easiest and most impactful habits you can adopt.
We could return 90% of our drink containers for recycling with a simple solution already proven in 32+ countries. âťď¸
A nationwide Container Return Scheme is ready to launch in Aotearoa. It includes:
đ° A 20-cent refund per container
đ A target of 90% collection
đ Easy drop-off at depots & retailers
The plan is designed, public support is over 75%, and trials were a success. So why the wait? It's time to turn this blueprint into action.
Let's encourage our government to implement a scheme that works. Tap the link in our bio to learn more and see how you can help make your voice heard. đŁ

Plastic isn't just pollutionâit's a hidden driver of climate change. đ¨
New science shows microplastics are crippling the ocean's "carbon pump"âits natural ability to absorb COâ and cool our planet. By harming marine life and disrupting cycles, they weaken Earth's #1 climate defence.
đ The oceanâs health is our climate's health.
Every refill stops plastic at the source, protecting this vital system. Your choice to reuse is a direct climate action. đŞ

That acrid smell of burning plastic is more than just unpleasantâitâs a global health and environmental emergency. đđ
A recent global study reveals the hidden crisis of households forced to burn plastic waste, releasing toxic fumes that poison both people and the planet.đŞ
Iâll never forget cycling in Laos and Vietnam, passing piles of smoldering plastic. The smell was overwhelming, and it sharply affected my breathing. For many, this isn't a memory; it's daily life.
But here in Aotearoa, we have the power of choice. Every refill, every piece of single-use plastic we refuse, is a vote for a safer, cleaner world. Itâs a direct step away from this toxic cycle.
đ At @RefillNZ , weâre building a reuse revolution to make ditching plastic easy and normal. Join us. Your refill is part of a global solution.

Celebrating Dr Jane Goodall
đą Dr. Jane Goodall didn't just revolutionize how we see animals; she redefined what conservation means.
She journeyed into the unknown and returned with a truth that changed science forever. đ Dr. Jane Goodallâs revolutionary work with chimpanzees revealed their complex world of tool use, warfare, and deep emotional bondsâforever blurring the line between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom.
But her legacy didn't stop at observation. She saw the threats to their existence and knew that to protect our primate relatives, we had to protect the people who share their world.
Her holistic vision for conservation is what makes the Jane Goodall Institute so powerful:
đż Protecting Primates & Habitat: The TACARE project fights deforestation in critical chimp habitats like Gombe through community-led reforestation.
đŠđŹ Empowering Local Women: This same project provides scholarships and education for girls, creating a new generation of female leaders and conservationists who are the true guardians of their environment.
Dr. Goodall is the ultimate model of a woman who made a differenceâfor animals, for the planet, and for future generations. She proved that compassion is a powerful tool for science and change.

Plastic waste could be HISTORY in 15 years. The game-changer? Reuse & Return."
A groundbreaking new report says we could virtually ELIMINATE plastic waste within 15 years. How? By making reuse and return schemes the norm, not the alternative.
The report's message is clear:
âĄď¸ Recycling alone wonât fix this. We must STOP waste at the source.
âĄď¸ We need global policies that phase out single-use and support reusable infrastructure.
âĄď¸ Imagine a standardised system where you can return your food pots, drink bottles, and detergent containers to be cleaned, refilled, and used again⌠and again.
This is the ultimate #RefillRevolution. Itâs the heart of what we do.
