A sneak peek into Episode One of Saltwater Detectives 🪸🔍
Fresh from its world premiere at the Ocean Lovers Festival in Bondi, this powerful new series brings together culture, science and storytelling on the Great Barrier Reef.
You’ll recognise Reef Cooperative Cultural Officer and Gunggandji Traditional Custodian Frederick Le Foe, working on Sea Country to help protect and restore the World Heritage–listed Great Barrier Reef. Bridging Traditional Ecological Knowledge with modern marine science, Fred’s work highlights the strength of collaboration in caring for Country.
Filmed on the Reef Magic Pontoon in a cinematic and observational style by co-creator and Cultural Director Lucresia Willett, alongside Margee Brown of the acclaimed series The First Inventors, and Emmy Award–winning cinematographer and marine biologist Richard Fitzpatrick.
Join the special LinkedIn screening of Episode One and hear directly from the creators and custodians behind the scenes - 6th May (link in comments to learn more).
And if you’re keen to take it a step further, our upcoming Reef Recovery Days give you the chance to meet Fred in person and get hands-on in active conservation, contributing to our site-assisted recovery efforts on the Reef.

How could you say no to this face 🐠🩵
This is the kind of welcome you get from the ocean when you snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.
Come and say hi to the curious locals yourself 🤿

Could you spot what our Marine Biologist and Master Reef Guide Jemma found? 👀🪸
Master of camouflage, tucked beneath a rocky ledge at Nemo Bommie, this wobbegong was perfectly hidden in plain sight.
With their intricate patterns and fringe-like skin that mimics reef textures, wobbegongs are ambush predators, lying in wait for unsuspecting prey to swim just a little too close…
Spotted during a site stewardship monitoring dive as part of the Tourism Reef Protection Initiative! This one’s going into the sightings network! 📲

Manta Magic at Reef Magic this week! 🪸
Our TRPI Site Stewardship team had a pretty special encounter with this inquisitive manta ray, cruising in to check out what fine-scale juvenile CoTS monitoring is all about.
Could it be “Scarlett-Jean”? The manta we encountered on the wall last year, named through @projectmanta after an inspirational young eco-warrior.
And it didn’t stop there… one of our Marine Biologists on Fitzroy Island also had a manta ray encounter at Shark Fin Bay during yesterday’s Snorkel Safari 🤯
Safe to say, megafauna season on the Great Barrier Reef is well and truly on its way 🙌🏽🐋
Encounters like these are logged on the ‘Eye on the Reef Sightings Network’, contributing valuable data to help monitor the GBR and you can be part of it too by downloading the easy-to-use app 📲

RUBBLE TO REEF 🪸
Join the Reef Cooperative team at the Reef Magic Research Station as they install over 100 Reef Stars on Gunggandji sea country.
This is site-assisted recovery in action, stabilising loose coral rubble so new coral life can settle, grow and rebuild complex reef habitat. Reef Stars create a strong foundation for coral fragments, helping speed up natural recovery after disturbance.
Every star placed is a step toward:
🐠 increased fish habitat
🪸 faster coral growth
🌏 a more resilient reef for the future
Join us this Thursday 23rd April onboard @reefmagiccairns for our next Reef Recovery Day, where you can get hands on in active conservation! 🙌🏽
