Coming soon to Red Hook Editions: “The Power of Observation” is a book of drawings by Edward Grazda based on (at the time, undeveloped) photographs taken by Grazda in his travels in Asia the 1980s. “These drawings were made while I travelled. After a day of photographing I would draw something that I had photographed (or thought I had photographed) that day. It was only months later that I would see the photographs of the things I had drawn from Memory. It was as if, when making a photo, the image was not only fixed on the film, but also fixed in my mind, to manifest itself in a small notebook drawing. Today, some 35 years later, I am not sure how these drawings came to be.” -Edward Grazda

While working as a guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Jason Eskenazi began to ask photographers he knew visiting the Looking In exhibition about Robert Frank’s The Americans, to choose their favorite image and why. In the years since he quit, as he got back out on the road again to shoot, he compiled hundreds of photographers’ answers in this unique book destined to become a classic in photography education. “The Americans List” is available for purchase at redhookeditions.com Includes contributions from Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Jeffrey Ladd, Robert Frank, Martin Parr, Philip Perkis, Daido Moriyama, Bill Burke, Josef Koudelka, John Gossage, Anders Petersen, Mark Steinmetz, Vanessa Winship, Alec Soth, Mary Frank, and many more. For many years Jason Eskenazi collected the "Double Zero" frames (created when you close the camera back after loading your film and advancing to the first frame to start to shoot) from Kodak Tri-X film, normally snipped off, discarded and put in the trash. He began to see something ethereal in these images. Something on the cusp of being born and half-formed, but still in its embryonic phase. Double Zero are these frames culled from many trips over many years that had been left in a box. The series resolves itself from 00 - 0 to a full positive frame a nd thus resolving, becoming, being born. Photos are culled from Afghanistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and New York for the last 20 years. “Double Zero” is now available for purchase at redhookeditions.com Book Details: Swiss binding Open spine Soft cover with dust jacket 136 pages 1200 copies 14.3 x 18 cm ISBN: 978-0-9841954-4-2

Jason Eskenazi's “Black Garden” delves into the expansive geographical world known to the ancient Greeks in Turkey, Greece, Syria, Palestine, Israel, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt. Black Garden moves into the mythological world of duality and opposites which are explored through the masculine/feminine and east/west divide. The book is divided in half with a double gatefold seascape bringing the thematic ideas into the physical construction of the book. Included in the 154 tritone photographs are nine panoramic images. The book is dedicated to the author’s grandparents who took the trans-Atlantic immigrant journey in the early part of the last century to New York. “Black Garden” is available for purchase at redhookeditions.com by Jason Eskenazi Book Details: Open spine binding 184 pages 154 Black & White Tritone photographs 29 x 21 cm, 1.23 kg / 2.7 lbs Printed at Mas Matbaa/Istanbul 2019
