Participated in a prescribed burn at Lambton Park this week. As part of the wildlife sweep, we cleared the way, asking inhabitants to move out of the burn zone. We caught 15 snakes, a snail and some grasshoppers before Forest fire fighters got to work so the honour of burning the brush.
My little heartstrings were pulled, as I wept through this performance. From the joy of David and Tara’s love story, to the issues we face as Canadian’s today, I cried.
I recognized my own community’s struggles in the work they talked about. I valued the Indigenous people’s lessons they learned and fought for, and shared with us. All around a standing ovation kind of night.
My heart did race as I approached the table to have my books signed. I had so much to say, and couldn’t find the beginning of a sentence. Not really sure what came out of my mouth, but Tara did say some encouraging words about women and community.
Thanks @barbabelle00 for asking me to go.

Please consider signing this petition to ask the city to reconsider their plan
The pond we have released 186 hatchling turtles into last season, is in this zone where they plan To cut down 847 trees to have access to planned construction. A plan that they admitted in the last week is flawed and will not mitigate flooding in this area that is prone to it. So why displace the plant and animal relatives to have a parking spot for the equipment of destruction?
Toronto Cruisers have ridden bikes down this switchback into a lovely park full of wetlands.
Turtle protectors have taken a tally of the wildlife we have kept safe on this land.
Friends of Smythe Park held an emergency meeting to see what actions would hold the most impact here.
Our Indigenous Elder holds ceremonies in this park, and it holds a medicine garden.
This path along Black Creek is known as Carrying Place, and just because they passed bill C5 doesn’t mean cutting down trees for convenience, at a week’s notice is right.
“The ancient Indigenous Carrying Place travels through the park, which makes it sacred land with high historical significance.”
Anyone free Saturday to make some noise/ know some media/ is willing to hug a tree?
About Smythe Park (aka my gem of a place to witness the most wildlife in Toronto)
The park is located at the end of the Black Creek watershed, approximately 70 metres from the Humber River. Due to intense urbanization, Black Creek has become highly polluted, its route straightened and banks cemented. The area is recognized as the worst flooded area in the TRCA’s jurisdiction. This flooding is a serious threat to the park. Friends of Smythe Park along with the Toronto Nature Stewards are using the Indigenous approach and adopting stewardship plans to protect the park from invasive plants, litter, and flooding. We intend to reverse the damage and through stewardship activities, allow the park to thrive and bring back its natural beauty.
