The idea came from John Bulmer, former Shasta County Sheriff, whose son became disabled after an accident. John wanted to share his love of the rodeo with his son, who could no longer participate. So, he and his friends took horses to Monte Vista School and gave disabled kids the chance to ride. The joy it brought to these kids was undeniable, and soon Special Kids Day was born at the rodeo grounds, becoming a cherished annual event.

This year, we’re celebrating more than just the rodeo at the 78th Annual @redding_rodeo . In the latest episode of The City Builders Podcast, Ted Bambino shares the powerful connection between the rodeo and Native American heritage.

From the moment Native American tribes became part of the rodeo, their presence has been a meaningful and sacred addition. The grounds themselves are steeped in history, with Native American burial sites along the Sacramento River, just 50 yards from the rodeo arena. Each year, the tribe blesses the grounds before the rodeo, and Native American night is a highlight of the event.

This year, once again, we’ll honor their heritage with ceremonial dances that add a special, spiritual touch to the rodeo experience.
