Two ancient peoples. A shared history. And the word as a bridge. Rabbi Josh @rebjosh Weiner had only just discovered Shushana the evening he was asked to speak and yet he arrived with something quietly powerful: the belief that words and poetry are how two peoples remember they belong to each other.
The name Shushana itself tells that story. Shushan ancient Persia is where the Jewish feast of Purim was born. The Jewish and Persian peoples have been intertwined for thousands of years, so deeply that scholars today cannot fully understand the Talmud without understanding the Persian world in which it was written. Other peoples, other voices, other languages shaped what became Jewish tradition.
"Poetry has not stopped the missiles but if we continue in silence, we lose ourselves. To exist, and to begin, we must start with words, with letters."
He also spoke about a journey to Samarkand, where in an old synagogue he discovered Judeo-Persian psalms of King David written in Persian, in Hebrew letters. Poetry that crossed empires, alphabets, and centuries.
Shushana, for him, is exactly that: a space where words and letters keep that shared story alive.

בשנים האחרונות מצוין ברחבי העולם "יום השפה העברית" ביום פטירתו של אליעזר בן־יהודה, אחד ממחדשי השפה בעת החדשה. כאן בפריז, העיר שבה בן־יהודה שהה, למד ופיתח את רעיונותיו, נציין השנה גם אנו את היום הזה בערב ספרותי הפתוח לקהל הרחב (כן, גם צרפתים מוזמנים).
אפרים כהן, פייטן ומתרגם, ומייסד הפרויקט "קהילות שרות" בצרפת, ינחה ערב המוקדש לשפה העברית. תהיה גם הצגה של כמה ספרים מעניינים מאוסף הספרייה, וכן ערב שירה עברית. החלק הראשון של הערב יהיה בצרפתית והשני יותר בעברית.

Like most experiences in life, the more one prepares the better it is. Chanukah is deceptively simple, it’s just lighting some candles and eating doughnuts, no? We tell our friends at school and work: it’s like Christmas, just Jewish. But it has the potential to be much more than that. I tried to reflect on some ideas to elevate the experience, I'm sure there are many others. Let me know what you think!
Sharing here some old thoughts on Parashat Chayei Sarah, sense-making, exhaustion and intimacy.
"Abraham was One" (Ezekiel 33:24) אֶחָד֙ הָיָ֣ה אַבְרָהָ֔ם
We don't know much about the early life of Abraham and Sarah, except that they "made souls in Haran" - people were moved to emulate them, somehow, in their childhood home. No normal conversion, Abraham had faith but no religion; he had a mission, but was no missionary; no boring ideology or theology or idolatry. A lover has something to teach the world: not content, but form. If Abraham and Sarah had a message, perhaps it was about submission to destiny.
Sarah's death and burial, the ultimate rupture in stories-that-make-sense, forces Abraham to be rooted in space again. The Talmud tells of a rabbi who wanted to enter the burial tomb of Abraham and Sarah in the holy city of Hebron:
ר' בנאה הוה קא מציין מערתא כי מטא למערתא דאברהם אשכחיה לאליעזר עבד אברהם דקאי קמי בבא א"ל מאי קא עביד אברהם א"ל גאני בכנפה דשרה וקא מעיינא ליה ברישיה
"When Rabbi Banaa arrived at the cave of Abraham, he found Eliezer, the servant of Abraham, standing before the entrance. Rabbi Bena’a said to him: What is Abraham doing at this moment? Eliezer said to him: He is lying in the arms of Sarah, and she is examining his head." (Bava Batra 58a)
One of the clearest commentaries to this fantastic tale comes from Franz Kafka in a letter to Milena:
"I’m tired, can’t think of anything and want only to lay my face in your lap, feel your hand on my head and remain like that through all eternity."
After Sarah's death, Abraham wants to rest. The task of making sense of destiny is passed to Isaac and Rebecca and their descendants. Submission is still there, but more intimate, without a narrative.
We are children of Abraham, of course. But which one? Abraham who makes souls make sense, who makes today make sense in light of tomorrow's promise? Or an exhausted Abraham, resting in Sarah's lap? We are familiar with both these Abrahams in our life, and many more, and nonetheless, "Abraham was One."
Quand je suis arrivé en France il y a quatre ans, j'ai dit que je commencerais par me concentrer uniquement sur ma communauté et que je laisserais les discours publics à d'autres. L'enseignement, c'est différent, j'aime toujours ça. Je viens de réaliser que le mois prochain, j'aurai la chance de participer à de nombreux événements, à la frontière entre le discours et l'enseignement, et je me rends compte que cela me va presque très bien. Je partage ici les titres, notamment pour ne pas les oublier moi-même... Certains sont publics, d'autres semi-privés ou destinés à certaines tranches d'âge, mais je serais heureux de poursuivre les discussions sur ces thèmes dans d'autres contextes également.

* 6 décembre - Étude (et chant) des trois poèmes kabbalistiques de R. Isaac Luria avec @kehilotsharotfr et avec l'estimé Benjamin Singer.

Reality is random chaos – inasmuch as we are conscious beings, we can swim through life letting Things happen to us. Or: we can respond to Things, and imbue our actions and choices with meaning.
This is the essence of Yom Kippur as ‘Day of Judgement’ – taking a pause from the flow of being-happened-to, our actions of the last year are inspected and questioned, judged. A day without delusions: we admit the inevitability of death, see ourselves as we are, examine our actions with pre-death honesty, make healthier choices.
And then celebrate! “There were never days as joyous as Yom Kippur.” How wonderful to be judged, to be seen; for our lives to overcome chaos and become intentional, meaningful and unique.

An ancient prayer says “Hayom harat olam” – today, the world is pregnant. A new year is here – but it’s always a new year, every second the world is birthing itself into being. Today is pregnant with tomorrows, they unfold to become todays as we notice them.
There’s a drama we play out on Rosh Hashanah, a reminder of mortality and the significance of our behaviour. But only in order to shake us up, wake us up, free us of tired promises and encourage us to make new ones.
The world is pregnant: the perpetual birth – with its accompanying joy, anxiety and dreaming – is what we call Reality. The most honest prayer is ana zamin lemehevei – “I am ready to become!”
