Excited to start this new chapter as the Producing Discipline Head at the AFI Conservatory. My producing career has run parallel to my passion for educating and mentoring aspiring filmmakers and helping them pave the road for a creative life. I am honored to be joining the ranks at an institution so prestigious as AFI and have the opportunity to elevate this work. And yes, I’m fully back in Los Angeles again. The last decade in Michigan was exactly where I needed to be and now it’s time for another adventure in LA.
I just learned of the passing of my dear college friend Drew McLean who lived in a small town just outside of Asheville, North Carolina and who was swept away by Hurricane Helene’s flood water. We graduated from @uncsa in 2001 and I had last seen him when I was back at our alma mater to teach in 2019, he drove 2 hours just so we could have breakfast together. Watching the floods sweep through NC, I texted him to make sure he was ok but never heard back. Drew had the biggest heart, was curious about the world, loved god and the beauty of North Carolina, and treated everyone he met with immense kindness. When I think of Drew I always think of this photo I took of him floating in the pool of the apartment I lived in our third year of college. Drew’s light was so bright it could never be extinguished 💫
Spent the weekend in Baltimore teaching a masterclass in producing for the @saulzaentzinnovationfund with Daniel Tantalean producer of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner IN THE SUMMERS and Dear Producer Award recipient Megan Gilbride. We talked financing, festivals, distribution, pitch decks, and building community and surviving a career in the arts. Also had the best tacos and margaritas and got soaked in the rain.
Looking back on an amazing trip to New York. Saw the most joyful and clever broadway show @andjulietbway with my dear friend @s_d_s who happened to be in NY at the same time, went on stage to meet the cast after the show (photo by @rebeccajmichelson ), had the 8 years in the making premiere of ALL THAT WE LOVE by @yentanpics , followed by a fabulous dinner at @momofukunoodlebar , then hosted a @dearproducer party where I 🥂 with @opticalrailroad (photo by @jankopics ) and came back to a sweet treat from my hotel. I first read @yentanpics script for ALL THAT WE LOVE in 2016. A beautiful reflection on grief and second chances, the story deeply resonated with me, as I had recently lost my mom. Now 8 years later, we’re so excited to be bringing the film starring the iconic @margaret_cho to audiences at the Tribeca Film festival. #Tribeca2024
When I was in film school, we were so caught up in our projects, I did not explore and appreciate the beauty of North Carolina. Doing what I can to make up for that while I’m back at my alma mater as a guest lecturer.
