Sankofa is an Akan word & concept meaning “to go back & get it,” the importance of drawing wisdom from your lineal roots to propel forward. That concept has kept a battery in my back & a fist in my hand while I grieve a culture I never got to experience, and a bigger smile knowing I have the tools to spiritually navigate that course with pride & grounding grace. I know my American history as I’m actively apart of it to this day, so it’s vital to me that I continue doing my ancestral due diligence to get the full scope on who my people were before & while fighting the colonialism that brought my lineage to American soil.
Balanta B’urassa/Balanta Mané — “those who resist” is the only calling cloth I could be cut from. I’m a byproduct of resistance by any means necessary at the root. From my art form to my locs, my dialect, my mind & body wired for high performance, creativity & combat. It’s always cliché for things to make sense until it makes sense.
@africanancestry 🤝🏾 this was a forever gift. My African lineal & Black American heritage has always been the grounds I maneuver on & speak through w/ pride & confidence — the portal this sankofa journey opened just intensified that. So much to say but so much more to learn & live through. Africa has given the world everything & I’m forever proud to be of the continent.
