November 12, 1993 — UFC 1: The Beginning marked the birth of a new era in combat sports. Held at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado, this wasn’t just another fight card — it was an eight‑man, one‑night tournament with minimal rules, no weight classes, and no judges, designed to find out which martial art was most effective when the gloves came off and the cage doors shut.
On that night, traditional disciplines and fighting styles collided. Savate, boxing, wrestling, shootfighting, sumo, and more all stepped into the Octagon, but it was 26‑year‑old Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu practitioner Royce Gracie — smaller and lighter than many of his opponents — who stunned the world, submitting Art Jimmerson, Ken Shamrock, and finally Gerard Gordeau to win the tournament and put BJJ on the global map.
UFC 1 didn’t just crown a champion — it sparked a revolution. What started as an experimental event with just a few thousand fans in the seats and a modest pay‑per‑view audience would grow into a global phenomenon, forever changing how fighters train, prepare, and think about mixed martial arts.

Why did Hélio Gracie choose to wear only a blue belt?
In this throwback clip, he explains the reason behind one of the most discussed choices in Jiu Jitsu history.
After stepping away from the federation he founded, Hélio wore the blue belt as a form of protest against belt promotions and instructor certifications that, in his view, no longer reflected the standards required to teach the art.
For him, belts were never about status.
They were about responsibility.
Different era. Same conversation.

The crazy early days of the UFC 🤯
A practising minister vs a skinny Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, where would you get it besides the UFC?
This fight was on September 9, 1994 and took place at UFC 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Royce Gracie shocked the martial arts world in UFC 1 and 2 when, despite being the smallest fighter, he defeated everyone by using his family style of Jiu-Jitsu which consisted on using takedowns, armlocks and chokeholds.
By UFC 3, he was the man to beat and Kimo was up for the challenge. Royce weighed in at 176 lbs and Kimo at 250 lbs. What a crazy event between people getting tossed through cage doors to hair-pulling 🤣
In this earliest events pretty much everything was allowed, head butts, hair pulling, groin strikes. The bout was full of action inside and outside the cage.

Royce Gracie isn’t just a combat sports legend, he’s one of the greatest instructors to ever step on the mat.
What makes this experience special isn’t only what he’s accomplished as a fighter, but how he teaches. His approach is clear, practical, and rooted in principles that work for everyone, whether you’re just starting, actively competing, or a parent watching your child grow in confidence.
This seminar is open to both kids and adults of all experience levels, with one simple goal: to give anyone who values martial arts the chance to learn directly from someone who helped shape it.
Every time @realroyce teaches, he brings a level of insight and inspiration that stays with you long after you leave the mat.
