Back in January my then 7-year-old and I took part in the 31 Day Read-Aloud Challenge by @readaloudrevival . At first my son was rather reluctant, but he kept reading to me for 15 minutes each day and slowly his confidence began to build. Then I found this series and he was off like a shot! Oh my gosh you guys, there's nothing like watching your kid become an enthusiastic reader!! I still can't quite believe it when I find him curled up in a chair reading, or when he comes to find me with a book under his arm to share the funny comic he just read. Nothing like it. 😍 And while I'm at it, I'm always on the lookout for good books for my 8-year-old to read, so let me know about any great finds! 📚

We are big fans of Chris Van Dusen over here and his newest book, about an unlikely friendship between a girl and a lake monster, does not disappoint! And as always, Van Dusen's illustrations are just fantastic--my faves are always the underwater scenes. 💦🌱Anyone else a fan?

We first fell in love with Mouse and Mole when we stumbled upon the charming British animation on Amazon. Of course, I couldn't help but buy the books after that! And as wonderful as the books are, I can't decide whether I like the books or cartoon better. Both are sweet and simply-told, full of humor and the warmth of friendship. Bits of the stories have even become inside jokes with my boys. 💗 {We've also enjoyed the audiobooks, narrated by Richard Briers and Alan Bennett.}

One of my favorite book purchases this year. I think we read it three times the day it arrived in the mail! ❤️ It's the story of little Hedgie the hedgehog, who lives in a peaceful corner of Miss Jaster's garden. One morning Miss Jaster (who is a little nearsighted) mistakenly sprinkles a few seeds on Hedgie's back as he sleeps in her flower bed. To Hedgie's surprise, a few days later he is in bloom! And the only word he can find to describe it is: Stupendous! 🌸 Definitely one of the most delightful picture books I've read in a long time. It's just adorable--even the endpapers are lovely!

Last month we enjoyed these two lovely books about the little Quaker boy who grew up to be known as the "father of American painting." The Boy Who Loved to Draw (by Barbara Brenner) is a shorter picture book version of his life story and we were happy to see a few of West's paintings at the back of the book. I think my boys' favorite part was when Benjamin cut his cat's fur to make paintbrushes! 🎨🐈
