Today at Esperanza Elementary School, one of our partner schools in Los Angeles, we had an amazing read aloud event with All-Pro NFL wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown! This joint event with Read to a Child, LAUSD, and the St. Brown Foundation showcased the fun of reading while also highlighting the importance of literacy and perseverance. St. Brown read “The Word Collector” to over 200 4th and 5th graders, and took the time to answer questions!
Thank you to Amon-Ra and the St. Brown Foundation, LAUSD, and our partners at Esperanza Elementary for making this happen!
As National Reading Month comes to a close, we want to share photos from a wonderful read aloud event! On March 18, students at Adler Elementary in our Metro Detroit region got to hear from space scientist Dr. Clark. It was a joyful and inspiring read aloud, with students engaged and Dr. Clark answering questions about everything from space to fighter jets. Thank you Dr. Clark for spending time with our Read Aloud Mentoring Program students!
We also want to thank Board member Dave Walker for his help bringing this opportunity to life, as well as the incredible staff at Adler! We couldn’t have done it without them.
We have an especially big thank you to Metro Detroit partner General Motors! It is with their funding that each student got to bring home a copy of Dr. Clark’s book, “Skyler’s Space Adventures: An Unexpected Encounter. Thank you for being such a great partner!
All of us at Read to a Child want to thank the Guru Krupa Foundation for their continued support! This year, we’re working to make improvements to the volunteer experience, as our volunteers are the heart of the Read Aloud Mentoring Program! We are incredibly thankful for Guru Krupa Foundation and their partnership over the years.

Mechalle read the “The Wonderful Towers of Watts” to a group of excited and engaged students. Everyone had a lot of fun, and Mechalle even helped the students draw their own towers!
She was joined by Principal Kelly Gould, Vice Principal Kenji Foster, Vice Principal Jeny Rivera, and Read to a Child staff Jasmine Galloway, Kristen Baxter, Michelle Feudo, and Alison Gontarz. Thank you to Mechalle for being such a great reader with the students at Brophy!

Read to a Child celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the entire Civil Rights Movement. We encourage everyone to spend this day reflecting on the courage of leaders like Dr. King, and what each of us can do to make his dream a reality. Through the joy of reading and power of mentorship, we are all part of bringing Dr. King’s powerful messages of equality and hope to a new generation.

As 2025 comes to an end, we hope you consider supporting Read to a Child. Your generosity has the power to make a lasting impact on students who need it most. As Read to a Child volunteer Susan Fox writes, “This year, I also decided to become a mentor to a second student in the program. Volunteering twice a week—it’s a true privilege. I volunteer with Read to a Child because I truly believe in the power of reading to change a child’s life.”
Join Susan in supporting Read to a Child and volunteers like her before the year ends. Your donation helps bring the gift of reading and mentorship to students in under-resourced schools across greater Boston, Detroit, Hartford, and Los Angeles. Go to the link in bio or /giftreading2025
