The original Mississauga Central Library featured a dark, compartmentalized layout with limited natural light. For the revitalization, one of our first moves was to reshape the original faceted, octagonal atria forms into smooth, cylindrical volumes.
Clad with perforated drywall to improve acoustics and painted bright white to reflect natural light, these new forms create a sense of openness. A dynamic LED mobile, Lightfall by Nathan Whitford, now hangs below the skylight, symbolizing the flow of information and adding an engaging focal point to the entry space.
Beneath the skylights, we suspended a cloud-like arrangement of industrial felt circles on aircraft cables to diffuse light, absorb sound, and soften the space. This overhead softness is anchored by the building’s new, streamlined organization over its five floors. Clear sightlines and a colour-coded floor system guide visitors through the newly coherent and connected layout.
Together, these elements make navigation intuitive while giving the library a fresh, vibrant visual identity.

Take a tour of the Hazel McCallion Central Library in Mississauga, Ontario, and see public architecture at its most inspired. With a deft touch, RDHA transforms the original octagonal atria into a soaring, skylit cylinder, crowned by a cloudlike canopy of felt that softens light and sound. Podcast studios, 3D-printing stations, and outreach spaces radiate outward, all culminating in a glass-enclosed, pink-carpeted reading room where community, creativity, and quiet reflection meet.

A green moss-like carpet adjacent to the reflecting pool at Springdale Library blurs the boundaries between inside and outside.
Based on the sun’s position, the custom window frit pattern shifts from white to dark gray, visually merging with a series of stainless steel rods that add an additional layer of solar resistance.

Pint-sized versions of the furniture at Springdale keep the area connected thematically to the rest of the library while establishing that even though this is the children’s section, it doesn’t have to be designed differently.

Completed in 2018, the LEED Gold Certified library blurs the line between inside and out. Its mountainous, undulating green roof extends the surrounding landscape up and over the building.
