Last week, Ryan Lipscomb and Mike Gwin of RDCollab attended the Living Future 2026 Conference in Seattle: "Designing the Next 100 Years", and we shared progress on our project in Lahaina.
More than a green building, it's a model for designing with local communities in the wake of a disaster while honoring long-term cultural and ecological stewardship rather than short-term solutions.
The conference reinforced a few important concepts. Real progress, as Mr. Rogers described, comes from looking for the helpers—ordinary people doing quiet, unglamorous work. It also comes from making architecture not just sustainable, but regenerative.
Thanks to the community at #LF26, sustainable practices are becoming more accessible to all. It's our duty as designers to make regenerative thinking the new normal, not the exception.
"If you are on the right path you will find that invisible hands are helping." — Joseph Campbell

Happy Spring! A number of us kicked off the first day of the season by planting trees along the Penn Street corridor here in the Strip.
Thank you to the Strip District Neighbors, The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Tree Pittsburgh, and the City of Pittsburgh, for helping to fund and coordinate 70 new trees in the neighborhood. Also a thanks to the dozens of residents who volunteered their time, and to Salem's Market and Grill for both hosting and feeding us!
The AIA Pittsburgh Leadership Institute has wrapped up its 2025-2026 season!
As a program of the Pittsburgh Architecture Foundation, the Leadership Institute develops emerging AEC leaders, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change within their firms and throughout the Pittsburgh region.
At RDCollab, we’re grateful to the dedicated leadership team for guiding the next generation of leaders:
• Facilitator: Ivette Mongalo-Winston and Kristen Maser
• Champions: Dina Snider, Eric Booth, and John Ryan
• Mentors: Melanie Buzgan Dower, Monica Blasko, and Nikita Williamson
We also appreciate Endy Reindl and the AIA Pittsburgh office for hosting this impactful program.
Congratulations to the 17 members of the 2025-26 Cohort, including our own Joe Wahy! The teams worked with multiple community partners, with Joe's group focusing on the Hazelwood Initiative, Inc.'s Second Avenue Business District. Great work, everyone.
RDCollab Architect Nick Rebeck, AIA, LFA, was among the innovators featured at this month’s Green Building Alliance Materials & Resources Week Lightning Talks, sharing projects and forward-thinking ideas with Michael Volpatt, Amelia Dougherty, Carlos Kelly, Shoshana Davidson, and Brian Trimble.
As a member of the Pennsylvania chapter of the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF PA), Nick delivered "5 Ways to Reduce Embodied Carbon Right Now," offering tangible, straightforward strategies for evaluating and reducing embodied carbon through material and product choices. We’re proud to contribute to conversations that move our industry forward.

In this week's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Your Big Idea” editorial, our Senior Principal and President, Ken Doyno, outlines practical steps for a "great big Main Loop” around the center of Three Rivers Park.
His vision focuses on better connecting our riverfronts with wide bridge trails across the central bridges, and continuous main streets between the South Side, West End, and Mount Washington, creating a more accessible center for Pittsburgh and a clearer path to a connected future.
