Responding to the alarming rise of e-scooter falls and collisions as the no. 1 cause of traumatic brain injury admissions at Children's Health Ireland, RCPI Faculty of Paediatrics publishes a new position paper today.
"E-scooter Falls and Brain Injuries in Children: Call for Action in Ireland" is based on data from CHI Temple Street's Acute Rehabilitation Service.
We are calling for:
• Meaningful public awareness efforts about e-scooters not being operated by under-16s.
• Exploring how to better enforce existing legislation regarding e-scooter-use.
• Exploring how to keep children safe, including reviewing existing legislation.

National Education Day | 23 May 2025
Congratulations to everyone who participated in National Education Day.
This is a special event in the college year, allowing trainees to showcase their talents and achievements in research.
Then vs Now….1987 ➡️ 2026
Ahead of next week’s Faculty of Public Health Medicine Summer Scientific Meeting, we looked back at the 1987 programme from the faculty’s annual summer meeting.
In 1987, topics included “The Computer in Health Care”, computerised epidemiological information systems and computer-aided decision making.
Fast forward nearly 40 years and the Summer Scientific Meeting continues to bring public health professionals together to share research, ideas and knowledge.
This year’s meeting, taking place on 19 and 20 May, reflects on public health medicine in Ireland - past, present and future as the faculty marks its 50th anniversary.
In 1987, registration meant phone calls and paper forms. Today, it’s all online, making it easier than ever to take part. Register your place through the link in our bio
This week's RCPI Masterclass is dedicated to the increasingly popular concept of coproduction - the supporting of patients to contribute more to the management of their own conditions.
Hear international experts chart this evolution from patient-centred to person-centred care.

RCPI is delighted to be hosting a special performance of Dan Lauria's 'Just Another Day' - a play of compassion and human connection 🎭 Join us on 14 May to watch the moving interaction between a comedy writer and poet, who meet daily on a park bench to talk and exchange wits. Follow as they try to navigate how they know each other, using their words and humour to guide them through their foggy world 🌫️
The play is brought to Ireland with the generous donation of performances by the actors themselves, with travel and accommodation kindly supported by Elliott and Cathy Masie, Broadway Producers whose work focuses on the concept of Ageing with Empathy 🧓
There will be a short panel discussion at the end, during which the audience is invited to share their reflections on the themes of healthcare, society, and lived experience 💭

"Ultimately, what is a doctor's role? It is to use their clinical judgement to take information from a range of different tools and sources. Increasingly, we are going to see doctors take information from many of these really intelligent tools and use those to make better decisions for patients."

RCPI and EY have published the first ever Irish research on the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical practice.
