This #WorkOfTheWeek is by Maria McStay. Titled ‘Collective Futures’, these are hand-built vessels made with crank clay and embedded with various rocks and minerals. McStay has embedded the geology of Gullane Bay, East Lothian, within each vessel’s surface, having gathered coastal rocks and crushed them into pigments to colour the clay. The multiple handles on the vessels suggest a shared responsibility for the land, but their unconventional shapes and fragile nature raise the question, how do we act collectively? Echoing ancient amphorae used to transport goods across cultures and centuries, the vessels invite reflection on care, connection and continuity. ❤️ ___________ 🌱 Earth Matters 📅 20 Mar – 1 Nov 2026 ⏰ Open daily 10:30 – 16:30 📍 Inverleith House 🎟️ Free Exhibition ___________ Image: Maria McStay, Collective Futures. For our Earth Matters #WorkOfTheWeek today we’re highlighting ‘Field Work’ by Aberdeen-based artist and ceramicist Kevin Andrew Morris. This work consists of a series of spades made from wild clay dug at the site of a former brickworks near Aberdeen. It is a reflection on the landscape as physical, social and cultural – transforming traces of local industry into sculpture. Dig it? See the piece in person in the exhibition Earth Matters at Inverleith House showcasing work by over 30 artists exploring the ground beneath us. ___________ 🌱 Earth Matters 📅 20 Mar – 1 Nov 2026 ⏰ Open daily 10:30 – 16:30 📍 Inverleith House 🎟️ Free Exhibition ___________ Image: Kevin Andrew Morris, Field Work, 2026. Our #WorkOftheWeek is ‘Interwoven’ – a cut paper work by Stevi Benson. In this work, Benson explores the complex patterns, structures and connections found in forest communities. She takes us below the forest floor to reveal mycelium – a tangled mass of fine, fungal threads called hyphae. A single teaspoon of healthy soil contains metres or even kilometres of mycelium. These delicate threads provide soil with much of its structure. Interwoven was painstakingly made using a very fine surgeon’s scalpel. You can view it in our current exhibition #EarthMatters, on until 1 November at Inverleith House. ___________ 🌱 Earth Matters 📅 20 Mar – 1 Nov 2026 ⏰ Open daily 10:30 – 16:30 📍 Inverleith House 🎟️ Free Exhibition ___________ Image: Stevi Benson, Interwoven, 2025-6. We are pleased to share that The Fungi Sessions Vol. 2 is out now! This new album from musician and composer Hannah Read is the next instalment in a growing body of work inspired by the world of fungi. 🍄 @rbgedinburgh visitors will be familiar with Vol. 1 from the Fungi Sessions audiovisual installation at the John Hope Gateway from August 2025 to January 2026. 🎵 This new suite immerses the listener on a journey, following the life-cycle of a fungus. The fruits of this album were inspired by the work of friend, mycologist and pioneer of fungi time-lapse footage, Dr. Patrick Hickey. The Fungi Sessions Vols. 1 and 2 are dedicated to Hannah's late father, the mycologist Nick Read. The Fungi Sessions Vol. 2 is now available on most music streaming services and can be purchased through Bandcamp. Happy Earth Day! 🌎 For our Earth Matters #WorkOfTheWeek today we are highlighting ‘Unearthed’ – a bench made for the exhibition by the artist Kelly Murray. The clay-rich earth in this bench was collected from skips and building sites in Glasgow and mixed with straw grown in West Lothian to make a cob mix. In Scotland, nearly 700,000 tonnes of soil is sent to landfill each year, even though unfired earth can be infinitely reused or returned to the ground. On this Earth Day, and every day of the exhibition, we invite you to sit down on ‘Unearthed’, look out over the Botanic Gardens, and appreciate how much EARTH MATTERS. ___________ 🌱 Earth Matters 📅 20 Mar – 1 Nov 2026 ⏰ Open daily 10:30 – 16:30 📍 Inverleith House 🎟️ Free Exhibition ___________ Video credit: Charlotte Büchner ___________ @rbgedinburgh A creative partnership with @designexhibitionscotland , Earth Matters is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and Edinburgh Geological Society, with special thanks to @jameshuttoninst . Soil is everywhere, so get to know it! Let's step into our exhibition Earth Matters on #EarthDay 🌍 The exhibition marks 300 years since the birth of geologist James Hutton, and brings together the work of 30 artists alongside historic pieces. Don’t miss Theory of the Earth, Hutton's groundbreaking book that laid the foundations of modern geology. Then look out across Edinburgh to Salisbury Crags, where Hutton found evidence that supported his ideas. 📍 Open daily at Inverleith House Gallery until 1 November 2026. Free entry.
