Last week over 450 young people from @bristolamplifyeducation the new multi academy trust in Bristol took to the stage of @bristol_beacon alongside over 25 RBC students and staff led by RBC L&P to perform a world premiere of ‘CONNECT’, a five movement orchestral and vocal score highlighting the power of music to bring people together. The concert and event showcased the amazing talent within the trust and provided an inspirational and unforgettable experience for young people from diverse backgrounds across Bristol, building on our shared philosophy of using music to reach out to ALL young people as a basic right of education. We cannot wait to work with more schools across the trust in future years and plans are already being discussed.

We're absolutely buzzing to introduce our Guest Artist for this year's SoundLab Summer Concert - NEONE the Wonderer!
Born and raised in Wolverhampton, rapper/producer NEONE has been motivated by music and art from a young age.
NEONE is a musical alchemist, mixing genres to create unique, signature sounds. His music is an eclectic Jazz-grime fusion, taking inspiration from Neo-soul. NEONE intertwines captivating stories between his instrumental environment and lyrical journey through myth, wonder and life experience. He produces and vocals contagious tracks, incorporating live musicians to create a wholesome feel. NEONE's recordings come to life on stage, generating a charged but immersive, safe space for self-exploration. Through metaphor, he shares his vulnerability, he gives listeners an artistic, uplifting approach to confronting inner demons to develop strength and self-love.
NEONE will be collaborating with SoundLab to perform some of his original material in the summer concert, as well as working on a brand new, as-yet-unheard piece. We can't wait to welcome him to the SoundLab family!

Last week, we were incredibly privileged to be invited back to work with National Orchestras For All (NOFA). Our SoundLab Small Band taught their tune "When I Feel Awake" to NOFA participants, who in turn came up with some amazing ideas of their own for the song. The SoundLab/NOFA collab band shared their awesome new arrangement at the end of the week residential.

… and just like that, another term is done!
The Spring Term went out with a very characteristic BANG in the form of another awesome concert in the RBC foyer. As well as our full SoundLab Central band, we also heard from our Guitar Group, who played a brilliant rendition of Hey Joe, the SoundLab Small Band, who performed their new song "When I Feel Awake", and our two brand new EDP schools - Selly Park Girls School and Arena Academy.
We love having access to so many amazing spaces here at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and the foyer has a special kind of buzz!
We'll see you in the summer term for more music-making!

Yesterday our RBC Young Singers met for a workshop on Improvisation with the wonderful Wendy Nieper. By the end of the day every single Young Singer had done a solo improvisation.

Can opera be enjoyed by everyone?! 🤔
We certainly think so! That's why we've spent the last two months visiting six primary schools to deliver our 'Introduction to Opera' workshops. 1,250 children got to experience live opera in their school assembly and learn all about opera! They also took part in smaller group workshops where they sang and acted out opera stories. 🎭
It's not just about performing, though - the children learned about all the behind-the-scenes roles that make an opera production happen. 🎨
Here's what the schools thought:
"Learning the song from Hansel and Gretel was a particular highlight. Pupils were fully engaged and sang with growing confidence”
"It is great that these sessions exist, as introducing the children to this art form is incredibly meaningful, opening doors and giving these young people access to something inspiring that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to discover.”
We're really grateful to The Linbury Trust and Dr Keith Bradshaw OBE for supporting our opera outreach work.
As we hurtle through another year (how are we nearly in March already?!), we're making final preparations for our Spring Concert.

Last week, we were incredibly lucky to have our wonderful student leader Ollie share some of his own music with us - in the Conservatoire's Organ Room no less!
Ollie played us some recent music he's written for Organ and Drum Kit, followed by activities inspired by these beautiful instruments.
We're so fortunate at SoundLab to have the incredible facilities of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire at our disposal, as well as a wealth of creative talent from its students. Huge thanks to Ollie for bringing us his inspiring compositions, and to Ben Shankland for performing alongside Ollie on the organ. What a fantastic session!
