In our investigation on the global coffee race, Matt Toogood, Co-founder of RAW Coffee Company in Dubai, raised a sharp warning:
“Showmanship hurts the market more than it helps.”
Matt highlighted that Dubai has become a unique laboratory for specialty coffee, but the real change was driven by independent cafés, not big chains.
He criticized chains for using “specialty language” while masking poor coffee with milk and sugar, and called the record Geisha purchase more of a publicity stunt than a viable business move.
His concern: farmers risk being misled by inflated auction prices and false expectations—a danger that could distort the very market it pretends to elevate.

2025 is a different year for the coffee industry in Dubai.
The rhythm of business is off compared to previous years, and the consequences of decisions made by owners in the past are now coming to fruition.
Right before summer, when we recorded the series that’s featured on the global podcast this week, Matt Toogood @rawmattt and Kim Thompson @rawkimt from @rawcoffeecompany told us that the coffee crisis was knocking on the door of the industry in Dubai.
As the summer comes to a close, the crisis is now ever-present and the consequences to businesses in the industry, unavoidable.
