Some early drawings documenting the design process. We always approach each project with a site specific response — often those sites are ubiquitous rectangular suburban lots — this triangular shaped hillside lot in a Pacific Palisades neighborhood that was impacted by the fires truly drove the design approach. The lot shape, grade, views, light, wind, all informed the design.
Home hardening is a centric part of the program: all exterior materials are non-combustible—the perimeter walls will be wrapped with intumescent structural sheathing and finished with a combination of raked and smooth stucco; eave-less details at shed roofs (monopoly framing), no attics, enclosed soffits, defensible clearing around the footprint; fire wise landscaping; a plunge pool that can double as a water tank are some of the strategies.
‘Crest at Cerritos Beach’ villa was conceived as a series of stone and earth pigmented volumes, perceivably growing from the mountain side from where they sit. They meander down a steep grade, forming terraced levels that shift back and forth, shaping the interior and outdoor spaces — the east west axis maximizes sunlight and the incredible coastal and mountain views. Currently under construction and available!
