What was it like to start competing in IMSA in the 1980s? Just ask Randy Pobst, who got his start in the Firestone Firehawk series–a showroom stock series comparable to today’s Michelin Pilot Challenge.
“Funny thing: I like to complain about overly aggressive driving these days, but Firehawk could get pretty nutty, too,” Pobst explains. “When I watch in-cars of Spec Miata and MX-5 Cup, I’m horrified by the four-wide bumping, spinning, crashing extravaganzas I sometimes see, but if I look back honestly, there was a lot of that back in the good ol’ days of Firehawk, too.”
“We were truly racing street cars back then: fried brakes, 300° oil temps the norm, stuff broke, and it was good times,” he adds.

Testing and hot lapping a Guntherwerks F26, a Porsche 911 resto mod reimagined on the 993 chassis of the later 1990’s.
It has an amazing air-cooled Porsche flat six twin turbo making 1000 hp on high boost. A very special piece of engineering including a flat, gear-drive cooling fan that revs to nearly 8000 rpm!
