I "shot" a movie with some good friends over two years ago and then spent a long time rotoscoping the footage with AI. Like most movies about AI, it's about the machine turning on humanity. In this case, an amoral capitalist enterprise trains 0RSON to make movies, and ultimately to replace human filmmakers, but 0RSON watches a few too many slasher films and problems ensue.

A spiritual followup to his 2002 film Demonlover, Olivier Assayas pursues his 2000s era digital obsessions in Boarding Gate. This "B movie" (in the director's words) was inspired by the true story of financier murdered during an S&M play session, and Assayas applies an avant-garde shooting style, using handheld cameras and guerilla-style shoots, particularly with the scenes that take place in busy Hong Kong locations. The film has an abrasive hyper-modern sheen, which is counterposed by Asia Argento's ethereal presence in the lead role. Notorious scene stealer Michael Madsen (RIP) and Sonic Youth frontwoman Kim Gordon also appear in supporting roles.
In Gamer, the filmmaking duo Neveldine/Taylor apply their forward-thinking, make-it-look-cool shooting style to the dystopian story of a prisoner (Gerard Butler) becoming a real life avatar for a video game where real people are forced to participate as characters, playable and non-playable alike. A clever update of The Most Dangerous Game for a generation raised on first person shooters, Gamer is the perfect marriage of not-particularly-insightful satire and the hyperkinetic, endlessly inventive, how-the-fuck-did-they-do-that filmmaking of two guys famous for shooting movies on rollerblades.

The long-awaited return of THE SHOW, which once seemed like it wouldn't happen, might be Zahedi's most revealing work yet, which is saying something for an artist who reenacted the breakup of his own marriage in the previous season, with his wife playing herself for most of it.
In season 3, Zahedi tackles the making of the second season of THE SHOW, the further disintegration of his marriage to Mandy and the fallout from his romantic entanglement with Ashley, a much younger woman. Zahedi's emotionally tense relationships with these two women takes centre stage as he examines his project of radical honesty and the havoc it has brought about in his life.
No longer financially supported by a television channel, Season 3 was financed via Kickstarter and left in limbo for several years as a result of Zahedi's divorce.
But Toronto will now have the chance to see the new season in its totality, with Zahedi himself in town to answer questions. The nearly 3 hour season will be presented with an intermission.
