This right here is one of the most important records of my career.
I got a chance to reunite with old friends and help them reclaim / redefine their sound. Varials' PAIN AGAIN and IN DARKNESS are two hugely influential records. You think Lorna Shore's PAIN REMAINS and IN DARKNESS are coincidences?
My goal with WHERE THE LIGHT LEAVES was to take sounds from PAIN AGAIN and IN DARKNESS and blend them into something new and modern. Familiar, yet fresh. I wanted to use this Varials record to prove that I can do 3 records with the same band and still reinvent their sound all 3 times.
That to me, is the beauty and artistic satisfaction of making records. Albums that reflect the time and people who made them. Sounds and tones that tell stories about the people who were present when they were performed and captured. WHERE THE LIGHT LEAVES is a comeback record for a band who's been through a lot of turbulence over the past 6 years.
Through it all, this band and these dudes are still some of my absolute favorites to work with. They always deserved better than what they got, and I'm hoping this record finally gets them their proper shine. This time, just like the other 2 times, felt like a true collaboration, and collective trust in each others' vision for how a record should come together.
Mike, Sean, and I go back the farthest, and it's that bass and drums combo that is really at the heart and center of Varials' sound. I never get sick of working with these guys.
Shane was the new wildcard when we started, but I had so much fun experimenting and spending too much money/time on guitar pedals with this dude. Every penny and minute well spent.
Skyler is exactly what this band needed and exactly when they needed it. A true performer and source of intensity and animalistic energy. Dude reminds me of the oldhead metalcore vocalists from the 90s - just pure output, no technique, all power. Unity engine type unit.
Today is your day, fellas. I never lost faith in ya, even when shit went sideways. Even when y'all were arguing and screaming at each other. I always knew you'd lock back in and get this thing done the right way. Beyond proud <3
