My union is proud to build on our history of fighting to expand rights for all Americans. The AFT was the only union to file an amicus brief in Brown v. Board of Education. In the 1950s, the AFT expelled all local unions that refused to desegregate. This is another moment for moral clarity and action. This is an imperative for the AFT as educators, a union and a champion for civil rights. And it is an imperative for all Americans seeking to create a more perfect union. We must stand up against injustice. And when we do, we shall overcome, again.
AFT leaders and members from across the country are in Montgomery, AL today to send a clear message to the nation that the rollback of voting rights will not happen quietly, unchallenged, or without organized resistance. #AllRoadsSouth
Retirees are our daytime army. It was incredible to see a packed room, more than 200 AFT/NYSUT retirees show up to the meeting on Long Island today. They had questions about how we we have a democracy in light of of terrible court decisions like Callais and Citizens United. We talked, of course about voting. Energy like this gives me hope. We're gearing up for an election cycle like no other and these activists are ready.
In this week’s video, AFT President Randi Weingarten shares how our union is taking action on the issues most important to Americans right now—from affordability to the attacks on voting rights—and also discusses the latest news in students’ test scores and the impact of screens, big contract wins, and how we’re standing in solidarity with our members in their ongoing fight for union rights in places like Virginia.
Politicians are moving quickly to make it harder for people to vote and silence voters, particularly Black voters in the South. We can’t afford to disengage. This Saturday, I’ll be in Montgomery. Join us there or wherever you are for a Day of Action: AllRoadsLeadToTheSouth.com

I don't even have to words to tell you how great my visit to Greenburgh Central School District was. We talked about high school theater, IB programs, visited early education classes and more. We even visited the student art display at the town hall.
But the best part was when I sat down and was interviewed by the high school students. The questions that they asked were deep and thoughtful. We talked about AI, cell phone bans, screens, school funding and their futures. They were clear that they need us to be engaged, especially when it comes to issues about the future. Conversations like these give me hope for the future.
Thank you to James Bell, every educator I saw today and all the students who came out to the conversation. And thank you to the flag football team for giving me their winning ball!
These kids are our future. We have to create a pathway of hope and opportunity.
