Fiona Ramsay is simply brilliant in 'The Opera Singer' as she plays the un-named diva opposite the equally engaging Theo Harrington (Owain Rhys Davies). A masterful combination in this play that explores the price of fame. Humour, pathos and a balance of these two characters is brought to vivid life in this interview between nervous journalist Theo and the ageing star. It evolves into an intimate sharing of her truth, not without some Italian temper, (is this Callas?) Ramsay is magnificent as she visibly ages, almost 'mothering' this young interviewer, allowing us to see the price she has paid. Janna Ramos-Violante's writing and direction shows empathy and understanding and the dialogue is engaging, humourous and sharp. I loved it and wanted more! The audience is part of the conversation, listening and learning. Don't miss this, Ramsay captivates and had us in the palm of her hand to the last exit. On at the Baxter Studio until 7 February.
