440 Gallery is proud to present the 2025 Summer Theme Exhibition, Sacred Space, juried by Ramona Candy. Candy expands the notion of space—not just as location, but as presence—inviting us to consider how we inhabit the places that make us whole. Through a range of approaches—abstraction, implied realism, and sculptural gestures—26 artists have been selected from a national open call exploring how to define “sacred space” and how it defines us.

440 Gallery announces an open Call for Artists for our 2025 Annual Theme Show — Sacred Space! The group exhibition will be juried by artist/curator/dancer Ramona Candy @ramonacandy .
Artists at all levels are invited to submit work in all mediums. Selected artwork will be exhibited at our gallery July 10 – August 2, 2025.
Sacred Space — not necessarily meaning a house of worship, or maybe for you, it is. It is wherever you find peace.
What brings you comfort? Is it mountains or the seashore? Maybe your sacred space is in your art studio or your bedroom? In your art practice or your dreams? Perhaps it is within. It is wherever you go to seek refuge, meditate, create….
Does your sacred space have color, rhythm, and texture which can all be explored in your artwork? If so, apply to 440 Gallery’s Annual Theme Show.
Deadline for submissions is April 16 at 11:59pm. Submission fees start at $25.
Click the link in our bio for more info and to apply.
About the Juror:

Currently she is the Director of the Council for the Arts at St. Joseph’s University - Brooklyn campus, where she curates arts programming, connecting the University community and surrounding neighborhood with professional visual and performing artists.
Candy’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the tri-state area and in Timor-Leste as part of the US Department of State’s Art in Embassies. She has presented art-making workshops for Safe Horizons, Brooklyn Arts Council (SuCASA), and several other organizations. Candy is a founding member of Clark Center NYC, a dance legacy project.

Remembering Judith Jamison. This art was created in my high school or college years — and she has always been an inspiration - throughout and beyond my days as a dancer. #Cry #AlvinAiley #JudithJamison #dance
I led a fun online class with a wonderful group of people who work as advocates for people in need. These were my “samples” as we worked together via Zoom. Sorry I don’t have samples of their work but they did good. They did very good. Thank you for the opportunity.

Love discussing art and process with fellow artists, especially those from the younger generation. BecauseI was friends with his mom and aunt since high school, I’ve known this young man since before he was born 😊 and now he’s creating wonderful and impactful work. Stay tuned. Pictured here today, he’s in my home studio, asked about this mural piece from 2009 that he saw on my website, so I unrolled it and we went through it, section by section. Thank you @brockwell1984 . What a wonderful exchange. 💕

Going to miss these babies, the old and the new, but they are sold and going to the home of a beautiful, inspiring, gracious couple. Hey, let the adoptions continue. Both pieces are 30“ x 40“. Photographed, installed at Adelphi University in February 2024.

My one-woman show “Our History, Our Pride: The Legacies” at Adelphi University runs until March 2nd - for Black History Month. Here are a few photos of the public reception and artist talk.
Thanks to all my friends and fans who attended. You came from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey and I was just so pleased to see every one and to meet some new folks. It was like a big old school reunion - seeing some of my high school classmates, relatives, former co-workers and there were even a few folks meeting relatives they didn’t know. I love stuff like that. (smile)
Thanks to Adelphi University, the Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies for presenting me and especially for inviting me so early (back in July). Respect. Black History Month comes at the same time every year and it’s disrespectful, in my humble opinion, to chase down artists, performers and presenters in mid-January to participate in any programming. C’mon, people - you know I’m right. So ... kudos to the folks at Adelphi and thank you again for the (timely) invitation. I was even surprised with several citations from various Nassau County legislators.
My talk took everyone around the room, beginning with my collage historical portraits, then going into the legacies inherited throughout the diaspora and ends with abstract works that remind us the ancestors are always with us.
Special thanks to Marcia Diliberto, Peaches Diamond for the fun photos!!!!
