$620,000 worth of whisky today… how much tomorrow? Within the global whisky landscape, few regions have proven they can maintain then quality and scarcity needed to create investment-worthy liquid like Japanese distilleries. Among these storied institutions, Karuizawa holds a singular, almost mythical status. Established in 1955 near the small town of Miyota, nestled on the slopes of Mount Asama—an active volcano—Karuizawa Distillery achieved legendary status. After ceasing operations in the early 2000s due to financial constraints, the distillery remained dormant, a preserved legacy awaiting revival. In 2022, led by many of the original artisans responsible for its revered legacy including Master Distiller Osami Uchibori, the Karuizawa Distillery reopened it’s doors 4 miles form the original location and began pouring it’s first liquid again. We secured 5 barrels in total: • the 2 final 2022 “Sister Casks” from the initial test batch of 20 total. • the 3 final 2023 Inaugural Casks which represent the first whisky to be distributed once matured. Only 20 single sherry casks were filled in 2022 with just 5 making their way into private hands, followed by fewer than 250 in the 2023 vintage of which only 80 were distributed and only 25 were legally allowed to be sold outside of the country, all adhering closely to the original methodologies and recipes established nearly seven decades ago.
