In the spring of 2024, on our way to the Ironman 70.3 in Sidney, BC, we had our first major boating accident.
Entering a marina, we misread a chart and drove the boat straight up onto a massive boulder. Anyone who owns a boat knows that feeling — the instant you hit something hard and your stomach drops through the floor. They call it a “sinking feeling” for a reason.
We were stuck. The tide was dropping, and as the water slipped away, 20,000 pounds of boat slowly began to lean. Minute by minute it felt like watching a crash happen in slow motion.
Thankfully, we were able to get a tow before she tipped over completely. I’ll never forget the sound as they dragged her off the rock — grinding fiberglass echoing through the marina.
Then came the longest few seconds imaginable: waiting to see if she would float… or sink from damage to the hull.
Somehow, she stayed afloat. After a very nervous night crossing back over the Georgia Strait, we headed straight to the boatyard for repairs. And since we were already deep in the chaos, we decided it was the perfect time to repaint her too.
It was a LOT of work. Endless sanding, dust everywhere, and more than a few moments questioning our life choices. But in the end, we came out of it better than before. ⛵️💦

⛵️ Part Two ⛵️ - Naming your boat is serious business !
“Skypilot,” you ask? Weird name, no?
Sky Pilot Mountain (2,031m) is the highest peak in the Britannia Range near — famous for its rugged “mountaineering lite” scramble with steep snow and exposed 4th/5th class rock 🇨🇦
It’s also where we got engaged, at the peak, with our climbing buddies there as witnesses. Definitely a high — figuratively and literally 🏔
So fast forward 10 years - Skypilot seemed like the right fit for our big green boat.
Ps Copilot is the smaller peak to the right - so we got an instant dinghy name 😎

She becomes an extension of you — more like a family member than anything else.
Add in a little superstition, and you get sailors like Chris and me… taking our time before finally making the leap to name her Skypilot.
