IN STORES NOW! The Fangirl manga box set, from @gabinam0120 , @sammaggs and me! Includes all four volumes and the very same Simon and Baz poster Cath canonically has hanging in her dorm room. Excellent work, @vizmedia π
#ad I don't know where to start. Last week I went to Camp Unwritten with @reesesbookclub and World of @hyatt and some of the world's most fun and friendly readers. We stayed at the new Under Canvas Yosemite, so we had real beds and our own bathrooms, and the food was fantastic.
I was there as a special author guest -- with @emma.c.brodie -- and it was sooooo special. Like, a dinner themed to the things Shiloh cooks in Slow Dance. (So much toast! Monte Cristo sandwiches!) And I got to bedazzle my own book.
Total dream for me to be stuck in a beautiful forest with people who have copies of my books and no cell service. πππ
I was surprised by how much this retreat was really and actually about books. People were so eager to talk about their favorite books and bookstores, and to swap books.
If you have a chance to go to Camp Unwritten, I think you'd have fun. (And I'm not just saying that because they paid me to go.) There's another one this summer at Moab -- or you could book your own reading retreat at Under Canvas AT YOUR LEISURE.
Occasionally people give me gifts when I'm on tour, and I'm always blown away by the thoughtfulness and creativity. Here are a few from the Cherry Baby tour π
Look at these perfect Penelope and Agatha dolls -- Agatha's Watford hoodie is removable, and has Niamh's number on the back.
The Simon dragon with his bouffy hair π₯Ή
Also, hooray for "Winter Songs for Summer" representation. (Thank you to everyone who correctly assumes I have giant wrists.)
This quilting! I wish my next book had a motif as cute as cherries; maybe it's not too late to cram one in.
Thank you, everyone, for making my Cherry Baby tour such a good time. And please tell me if you'd like me to tag your creation π
This book sat in my travel bag for three flights while I read fanfiction on my phone. And *you know* that I don't think there's a problem with reading fanfiction on your phone -- but maybe it has hurt my ability and inclination to brave new worlds.
When you're always reading something familiar or something expected or something easy ... you start to shy away from anything that might challenge you.
I finally read Still Life when I lost phone service at Yosemite National Park two days ago, AND IT WAS GREAT. Strange and charming. Told like a long series of anecdotes, about one group of friends/found family after WWII. It's a little Ann Patchetty, and -- surprisingly -- a little Gilmore Girls. This is my second Sarah Winman book (I loved Tin Man), and I'm going to read everything by her now. Her writing is tender and empathetic. Evocative.
WOULD I HAVE MINDED SOME QUOTATION MARKS IN THIS BOOK?
I WOULD NOT.
But I mostly didn't think about it.
One last thing: There is a character in Still Life named Ulysses Temper, and I could make him happy.
